  1. Why does every AVI codec installer require administrator privileges? I don't know the admins password.

  2. It's not the codec's choice. It's Windows that requires admin to install system level software.

    If you don't know the admin password that's for a reason, you are not supposed to be installing software. It's not just codecs, any software you want to install is going to require admin privileges, and it's not just Windows, Linux is the exact same way, as is BSD and OSX.

    Many can be installed in userspace perfectly fine, but it does require some deeper knowledge and patient use of Procmon. I wrote some hack a while ago for installing Avisynth and some codecs in HKCU instead of HKLM:

    Unfortunately it doesn't include the binaries for the codecs, I didn't dare posting those for copyright reasons, so it turned out to be difficult for anyone to set it up.

    I'm now retired and don't run windows so it's cumbersome to build something that works.

    You don't see the contradiction in your post, do you?

    It's nonsensical to say that "Many can be installed in userspace perfectly fine" and then say it requires "deeper knowledge" and that it requires a "hack" and that it''s "cumbersome", that's the exact opposite of perfectly fine.

    No, not really.

    Maybe it's my English, it's not my first language, but to me something might work fine even if it a bit difficult to get there, and if the OP had a good reason he might put in the effort. He might even get some help from knowledgeable posters.

    But whatever, I don't care that much.

    Setup = not fine
    Operation (work) = fine

    Got it.

    But I doubt the OP is going to go to those lengths, or even be able to successfully complete them, if they don't even know admin pwd or have admin credentials. Better to fix the root cause.

  9. Never mind, because it installs to a admin modify-only folder.
