This player is suppose to play vcd, xvcd, svcd, and xsvcd. We have tried everything and it can only play standard vcd.
It would be greatly helped if someone can tell me what causes the apex to not play xvcd or xsvcd. I have been encoding movies to xvcd and xsvcd for a year now so i know what i am doing. It just seems that there is a limit to the apex's power that it cant playback movies at a fast bitrate or a slow one. we have tried bitrates of 1000 and of 1450, no luck.

I have a 500W and it plays everything I've tried to play on it. Mainly I make xsvcds (using Sefy's SxVCD NTSC Enh template and CQ_VBR 70% Hi2000.) I did make a xvcd when I first bought it and that played ok as well. I have the newest firmware if that means anything. Did you just buy the player? If so, it might be busted (I've heard that some of the Apex players are DOA.)

I would take this one back, and get an exchange for a different unit... maybe a DOA one...
On mine, it works for pretty much everything, I use VBR, and it does well with 800, 900, 1100, and 1300 AVG bitrates, with a 2400 MAX and a 0 (or slightly higher) MIN bitrate.
The Apex SHOULD play almost everything you throw at it, with only minor glitches (I just found out tonight that CD labels can cause another kind of glitch - avoid using them)... 99% of the time it should work... -
Damn if you can only get thisplayer to play standard vcd's must be something you do wrong.
This player will play anything. I'll just download mpeg files from online and just burn them not even caring if they are in vcd format or not, the player plays them all.
