  1. I'm getting the same problem w/ v-dub and avi_io where it wil capture a while and lock up and drop 100+ frames(v-dub) or run out of buffer space in avi_io. It does this with any cap resolution, compressed(mjpeg) or uncompressed. I should be able to do better with a 1.3 Ghz and 386 mb of sdram. Cap card is TV-blunder.

  2. I have one question/suggestion, have you tired shutting down all other applications that are running in the background (i.e. Virus Scan, Scheduler, internet connection, screen saver) before capturing the video? I have a 192MB of ram and 450mHz (I know I'm a dinosour) processor, but if I don't shut things down or try to run another program during capture, I often experience dropped frames.

    What is your capture resolution?
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

Your system is clearly fast enough. It sounds like the buffers in your system are gradually filling up to the point where there is no more space.

This tells me that your system is not tuned for capture,... especially since you have good processor performance. Other than the obvious things like,... defragging your capture disk,... checking the DMA settings, etc.

There are a lot of things that could cause this on your system,... take a look at the User Guides and in there you will find my guide on "How to tune your system for ATI capture" Hopefully there will be something in there that can help you.

Perhaps you could verify that there aren't conflicting IRQ's.
I had a similar problem like yours and it seemed that I had to reorder the PCI-cards at my motherboard so I didn't have any devices working at the same time using the same IRQ, which were necessary for the capturing (like the harddisk controller at the same irq of the capture card, sound card and so on).
Check the manaul of your motherboard ans screw your system open...

If all are oke, even after you've done some of the previous suggestions of the people who replied to your post, I strongly advise to re-install the OS of your system.
Also, if you can afford it, be sure not to install/use too much applications with your capture-OS (typical with Office stuff of M$ - they always conflicts somehow with third party software/hardware).

Before capturing, close everything else (also your systray and explorer).
If you're using wNT4 - it's normal you get troubles (nt4 is not intended for MultiMedia purposes), if you're using w2k or wXP see that all unnecessary services are stopped before capturing - you'll only save resources and vailable ram-memory.

  7. I too am having problems dropping lots of frames. I just checked my IRQ settings and my video card (nvidia geforce2 64Mb DDR) and capture card (hauppauge wintv go) both share IRQ 11. Is this normal, or do I need to try and assign a different IRQ to the capture card ?

    cheers
