DVD-R versus DVD+RW

I know this has been asked before but I couldn't find anything. What do you guys think seriously for movies and such?

for the same price, id rather go with the OFFICIAL format and more established format as well. (DVD-R) But the A04 around the chicagoland area is 500 bucks!! i want to find someplace that doesnt sell it in bundles so i can get the cheapest price.

Try buying through the mail. I got my DVR-A04 about a month ago for $385 (bundled). Since most of the bundled software is crap, if I had to do it over, I would get the DVR-104, which is the OEM version of the same drive (for about $340 now). If you are in a hurry, pay the $20 for FED-EX shipping. Do a search of www.pricewatch.com to check out the best prices (you may even find something there in Chicago are).

quick question. Just received my Pioneer A04 and installed it. Also installed PrassiDVD 2 for making data DVD's and no problems there. Still trying to figure out what authoring software to use for DVD movies.

Sonic ReelDVD seems to be a good one from what I could read. What version do I have to look for to work with my A04?

Thanks for the info.

So if I understand this right, with ReelDVD you can make the DVD files but to burn it to disk you need another Software.

Somehow looking at the ReelDVD price I thought it would do the burning part at the end as well.

No, ReelDVD WILL burn to the A03/A04. I (like others) have just found that using Prassi to burn is just a bit on the safer side. I had similar questions in the past, check out:

As far as quality goes they are equal,but when Microsoft stated that their next OS will support DVD+ and the fact that DVD+ supports Mt.Rainer and eventually blue format,DVD- will be on the clearance aisle along
with the Mac products

I currently have the sony dvd+rw. It's great! Dont get me wrong, my buddy has the pioneer a03 and its alright, but the burn time is longer. I can do a dvd in 20 min on the sony. My Buddy takes almost an hour. Also, I have 3 dvd players in the household -kinco? tvdvd combo, apex 500 and apex 700. Had to buy the sharp to replace the apex 700. Figures the one on the dolby stereo doesnt recognize dvd+rw. My Buddy refuses to replace his apex 700. So instead his computer recognizes my dvd+rw, so he'll copy it to a DVD-R so he can watch it. Also XBOX recognizes DVD+RW. Don't know about DVD-R. PS2 doesn't. Also on the rewrites, the dvd players don't miss a beat. I plan to buy a DVD-R Burner to add to my system just so when I convert camcorder tapes (partys etc...) to dvd I won't run into compatibility issues with that particular person that wants it converted.

DVD+R/RW does NOT support the forth coming blue format at all. Bluelaser DVD is a COMPLETELY NEW FORMAT. It takes DVD recording to a new level allowing high definition recording and much longer record times but it is still an experimental format. Sony are championing it the most but even they have said that professional recorders are still at least 1-2 years away and affordable home recorders will be a year or two behind that if not longer. On the plus side they are gathering support from almost all companies so it looks like we might be spared a format war if the couple of other companies working on high density DVD recorders drop plans and come on board.

It does not matter what format you currently have, be it DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW or DVD-RAM your recorder will NOT be able to play or record the blue format discs. You will need to buy a new machine.

Whichever format succeeds in the home audio/visual arena will be decided by the AV consumers not by us in the PC world. Pioneer dominates the DVD recorder market in Japan with it's DVD-R/RW format. DVD-RAM has been around for a few years in the PC world but has made very little impact in the home video recorder market despite being the better format for home use.

The fact that Microsoft has said future versions of Windows will directly support DVD+RW isn't really a major issue, Windows has supported DVD-RAM for a couple of years and it hasn't done it any favours. Those who have DVD-RW drives will have to spend an extra few seconds installing drivers.. oh, big hassle that.

You are wrong about the PS/2 computerchuck, the PS/2 DOES recognise DVD-R/RW discs, I know, I have created some that play fine on my PS/2. Early PS/2s did not have the MPEG audio hardware to playback discs that carried MPEG audio but they work fine with PCM or Dolby Digital stereo encoded discs. I understand that newer PS/2s have MPEG audio circuitry built in. The only thing with the PS/2 is that it is fussy about quality of DVD-R discs, better quality discs work fine some cheaper brands do not.

I stand corrected. I never tested dvd-r on ps2. I did test dvd+rw on ps2. It didn't play it. tried sony,verbatim,and memorex. Besides, the graphics didn't impress me much. Prefer xbox or dreamcast. Of course if you flood the market with sorry graphics games, it hurts a system. I did play mechwarrior2 on ps2-it did look cool. But final fantasy looked terrible except for the dvdcut scenes.
