I have looked at vdub and tmpg, but am not sure if this is viable or not..

Depends on your video.
If your subtitle is on the black area in a wide screen version, you should be well off with Logoaway filter in VirtualDub.
Due to the unpredictable nature of subtitles (One line,sometimes two lines), no filter can be perfectly applied.
