okay the solution is that to buy the 722, the 711 doesn't support dvdrw.

    I know I'm a smart %#@$, but its a living.

    Yes! Philips 711 supports DVD-RW and DVD-R

I'll repost what I posted on Doom9's IfoEdit forum:

I was having trouble with "The One", as the movie (widescreen only) was 3.03 gigs. After reading a post about my player I added a 1.13 gig file full of nulls as padding to the root directory of the DVD. This brought the total up to 4.2 gigs and both the Pioneer DVD-RW I initially made for testing and the three dollar bargain DVD both play wonderfully. For you Philips fans out there here is what I did/used:

Ripped ALL files with DVDDecypter 3.0.09
Followed Doom9's Layer stripping guide at: http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-advanced.htm

    Removed id's 2-5 from video_ts.ifo
    Deleted all VOB's aside from:

    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VIDEO_01_0.BUP
    VIDEO_01_0.IFO
    VIDEO_01_0.VOB
    VIDEO_01_1.VOB
    VIDEO_01_2.VOB
    VIDEO_01_3.VOB

I made a little app to create a blank file, no biggie, three api calls and you're done. Maybe Derrow could add an option for padding files *hint*

Burned the DVD with Nero 5.5.7.8 and Pioneer dvr-a03 with 1.65 firmware and the following structure:

    root dir - pad.dat
    VIDEO_TS - all other files
    AUDIO_TS - empty

    Thanks much Derrow and Doom9.

  8. this DVD-RW isue is gonna make me go crazy.
here is what I found out.
Philips DVD 711 plays DVD-RW but has to be revision 002 not 001.
001 doesn't read it, it tries for about a minute and spits the RW out.
no problem whatsoever with 002 revision.

anybody with revision 001 succesfull ????

  11. Finally got my Pioneer A04 a few days ago. Tried Ulead DMF and Sonic DVDit to author/burn Verbatim and Pioneer DVD-RW. My Philips 711 (no idea of revision number?) could play the Pioneer disc but not Verbatim. Will try other brands later and update.

There should be a sticker on the back of your player with
    number on it.
I asked folks a philips repair center and they said it is not
revision number but what region it was ment to be used in.

    Could you please check your:

    firmware version:
    P code:
