First of all, I apologize because I will sound like a complete newbie to this (I am)
My question is this... I have an AVI file that is roughly 716 MB in size. Is it possible to convert this to an MPEG that will fit onto a 700MB(80min) CD and still maintain decent quality?
I am using the procedures outlined in the conversion guide - using VirtualDub, TMPGEnc and VCDEasy. If I convert the whole file, I always end up with an MPEG that is around 920MB in size and which will not fit on the disc. I'd resigned myself to splitting it up, if necessary - but I thought I would ask here to see if anyone could recommend how to shrink it a bit without losing too much quality, during the encoding process.
Thanks in advance.

it will lower the quality but you could always lower the bitrate TMPG sets, if you do that you might try out VBR (SVCD) multipass to try and improve on the lowered bitrate. just load your file into TMPG and then load your template, then load another template found in either the extra folder or the main folder called unlock and it will allow you to adjust things a little more.

To have a MPG that comes out larger then the AVI, what exactly are you doing? Not meaning to sound mean or anything, but an AVI is the uncompressed video, and the MPG is the compressed video. What steps are you taking to to create the MPG? Maybe within those steps we can find out how to make the MPG smaller.

I could imagine that the avi is a DivX file. Its very easy to make an mpg-file thats larger. Or am I mistaken?

converting a divx movie to mpg usually will give you a larger file. the divx is a codec that is used to compress the avi, which makes the avi smaller then normal. for example, you can have an uncompressed avi that is very large and when reencoded with a divx codec it will make the file smaller :D

So, the I guess part of the question is if the avi is a DivX file or not.

Yes, it is a DivX file - the 716MB file is roughly an hour and a half worth of video.
