Video Studio 5.0 came with my ATI 32MB AGP Radeon AIW card, and I used it for a while. When UVS6 came out, I downloaded the trial and used it for about 2 days - then bought the by-mail (I like manuals and factory CDs) upgrade from UVS5 to UVS6 (50 bucks). It's no Premiere or Media Studio Pro, but for $100 you get a $100 app. These short reviews say everything I could say about UVS6:

As far as the trial being fully functional, it is, with an exception:
1. In the trial, your projects are limited to 30 transitions.
As far as I know, everything else works. In any case, the trial is only 30MB, so aside from a little download time, there's no risk.As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
The first link Mirror Image provided has this opening summary.
Ulead's Video Studio 6.0 offers a simple and direct solution for videographers who want to capture, edit and output their video without having to depend on separate tools or utilities.
I'm a firm believer that using multiple programs from various vendors that are not necessarily compatible is a major contributing factor to most of the issues that are raised throughout this site's forums on a daily basis.
If you use one program to capture, another one to edit, a different one to encode, something else to burn you will more than likely have trouble.
I've used VideoStudio since version 4.0 and like Mirror Image it was bundled with my ATI All-in-Wonder 128 Pro. It's a great video editing software and I would recommend it to anyone.
Just my opinion and $.02

On the subject of videostudio 6 is there a way to turn off the live video overlay when capturing? As my driver will only capture up to 384x284 with it on?

boss,
I'm not sure of what you are referencing when you say, "is there a way to turn off the live video overlay when capturing?"
I'm not familiar with "live video overlay when capturing" where are you finding this in the program as I can't find any reference to it in the capturing process of the program!?
Also, I can't find any mention of this in Ulead's help file.
There is an overlay track on the timeline but that has nothing to do with capturing.

Test away.... the quality of the realtime capture doesn't approach the offline encoders.

Talking about realtime capture of DV to mpg. Ulead transcodes on the fly and it still isn't very good. Not sure why you are so hostile.

Been using Videostudio since version 3. I now have version 6. It's a good program with a lot of features. The learning curve is great. with a little of manipulation, you can enhance capture qualities. Best to stick to templates. Only problem is the poor tech support. In order for my transcoding to work, I had to change values in the Dswplug.ini file. Don't expect help from Ulead.

A dumb problem with Ulead Videostudio is that it will not work with a video capture card that does not support overlay mode in dual-field mode. So, any BT8x8 capture card will not work above x240/288. If you have an ATI AIW with the capture chip onboard the VGA card, you will have overlay mode in any capture resolution. The only BT8x8 capture card that has a work-around is the WinTV PCI cards. It comes with an overlay.exe utility where you can force the preview mode to DIB DRAW, and it does work with Videostudio up to 720x480 capture resolutions.
Videostudio has the same problem with WDM drivers. It only supports overlay mode, not Tee Filter for preview mode. This is a limitation of the Videostudio software.
