So I have a video I was trying to convert, it's a 4.37gb mkv 1080p. Actually I have this issue with any video type. I use Any Video Converter because it's apparently the only program that can handle .ass subtitles properly (especially for hard encoding). I tried to use a bitrate calculator and apparently even 5200 bitrate isn't good enough for encoding to a 3.1gb mp4 file. It does have to be under 4gb as I can't transfer large files onto the flash stick to the ps3. Color banding and blocky artifacting is more visibly present in fast action scenes, or when there are lots of different colors/details. Anyway, I'm sure I'm doing something wrong here, maybe I need a better video converter or some kind of codec update? Below are screenshot comparisions

Your source is blurry, I think you can safely resize to 720p and save a lot of bitrate. Try also better settings that benefit animation like more refs, b-frames and so on.

The first one is actually the converted video. Are you sure the original one is blurry? The lines look crisp to me, it's just a old movie. Can you explain about refs and b-frames? I don't know where those might be in AVC

Dual pass and tune animation should work OK .
I have similar problem trying to fit source in 4GB due FAT32 limit and frequently properly preprocessed source can give nice results with less than 5Mbps. -
Any Avisynth based GUI such as MeGUI should be able to hard-code ass subtitles.
If they don't have to be ass, it's fairly easy to open them with a program such as Subtitle Edit and save them as srt, or maybe ssa instead. Can Handbrake open them?
Going by your screenshots, AnyVideoConverter is probably using fast and low quality encoder settings. I don't know if you have any control over that.
Personally I'd resize to 720p anyway. Encoding animation at 1080p seems like a waste of bitrate to me (although the screenshots are close to 900p). -
1080p cartoons usually look much better than that at ~5000 kbps. What AVC encoder does that program use?

videobruger, it says "foreign audio scan" does that mean the ass subtitle file?
hello- the size is just a crop from capturing the screen.Last edited by Kracov; 8th Nov 2016 at 14:38.

videobruger- no the subtitles are downloaded from the internet. i don't think there's a subtitle in the video at all. I use ASS so I can get black backgrounds
