  1. Hi,

I need help. I don't know how to download videos with subtitles from PBS website. The best option is the subtitles as a separate files but if there is not possible together with videos would be OK too.
I don't know this stuff and this is why I need your help.
Thank You in advanced for any suggestions !!!
    P.S.
I know how to download video but I don't know how to get subtitles.

Subtitles are not a part of the video. You need something else to grab the subtitles...there are some tools for grabbing subs from youtube videos but I don't know anything that supports PBS.

  6. Post the precise name/episode of the pbs show that you want the subtitles for. I will then try to post screenshots of how I get the subtitles. You will then have to adapt the method to work with other pbs shows.

You can download the PBS show subtitle file using Firefox with Adblock Plus. Load the video and then search with Adblock Plus for "dfxp" which is the file name extension of the subtitle file. This gives you the download address of the subtitle file. After downloading, you can use SubtitleEdit to convert the dfxp file to another subtitle file type such as SRT, SSA, etc. You can also edit the file. Looking at the particular PBS subtitle file, it definitely needs some editing.

Their subtitles are more closely related to Closed Captioning, as they are part of a signal. There is software that can pick up the text portion from this signal, but you will have to do some heavy editing and time adjustments to the text. As stated above, if you choose the adblock method, get SubtitleEdit and plan a a bit of time editing out weird characters and adjusting the timing.
