I have already installed avast free antivirus. I have disabled others like browser security, firewall etc. I wanted to have comodo free firewall duly disabling antivirus.
But, I couldn't find the way during installation and after to enable only firewall. I am unable to find the option / settings to install firewall alone to avoid conflicts between two antivirus programs. I also searched comodo site, downloaded internet security alone and installed. However, in spite of several attempts it installs combined firewall with antivirus combo. Can any one suggest the way to install the firewall alone.

Proactive defense simply means port watching and traffic analysis based on previous known behaviours from hackers, trojans, malware and worms ... not to be confused as antivirus protection.

Should you have the "combo" installer simply enter control panel > add/remove programs or programs and features (later os's) and select comodo firewall and select uninstall ... this will present the option to uninstall the antivirus part of the product ... this is only present if the antivirus component was installed initially.

Thanks Bjs. Uninstall option showed the screen where firewall alone was installed and no antivirus. Also, it gives only the back option and not next. So, I aborted uninstall.

However, avast antivirus shows differently. Any suggestions?

Check the system tray to see if other security software is running. If not, maybe Avast and Comodo Firewall are incompatible. When I did a search, others seemed to have problems with that combination.

You could keep Avast and use Windows Firewall, or keep Comodo Free Firewall and use a different antivirus, or use another pair of free programs.

That guide is from an archived thread, dating from December, 2006. It probably has no value in 2016.

Thanks for your suggestion. Checked the system tray and found both comodo and avast running. Anyway, I had set comodo only as a firewall. It seems both are not compatible. So, I will uninstall comodo completely and keep avast antivirus. I will use Windows Firewall as you have suggested.

I am not sure to go for any other free firewall.

I thought there might be some other security software running, like one of Microsoft's free antivirus programs, but since the system tray shows no security software other than Avast and Comodo, that is not the case.

To each his own. I used Comodo at one time, but at some point I updated to a new version and I disliked the new user interface. I stopped using Avast because it caused BSODs sometimes. I'm using ZoneAlarm Free and BitDefender Free now.

Are you using ZoneAlarm Free as a firewall and BitDefender Free as antivirus. Do you have provisions / settings to set like that?

    Yes to both.

I installed these programs more than a year ago. I don't remember what I did during installation, other than declining ZoneAlarm Antivirus (plus any other security software offered), and did not activate Online Backup or set up Identity Protection.

  10. I have Avast and an older Version 7 build on Comodo on my Win7 computer. I rolled back from V8 at one point because they had issues with inserting alternate stream data into every file which played havoc with differential backups. I've had my Win7 rig frozen on the most up to date V7 build since then. No real issues to report there, though sometimes Comodo does not start up correctly with Windows, which requires a reboot to fix. When I built my Win10 rig I went with Avast and the newest Comodo. I had no end of problems with Comodo. They did introduce the option to turn off the alternate stream data, but in classic Comodo style it was well buried in options. After about a month of troubleshooting and with help from Comodo Forums, Reddit, and Wilder Security, I ditched Comodo for good on that machine. It was making my computer unusable in odd ways. My system clock couldn't even update properly with Comodo installed. Evidently the product reputation has been going downhill in later releases, especially on Windows 10 systems. Now I'm just running the free version of Glasswire on that computer. It's a very good interface for the Windows Firewall. The free version doesn't allow real-time blocking though. You get to see new connections, but you have to set a rule for them after the fact. The paid version allows for real-time blocking. I've had zero issues with Glasswire.
