  3. well I assume that straight DVD-Audio discs have some sort of format. Either Multichannel 96k PCM or some high form of AC3 im not sure what they use. But when I look at the specs reviews for these DVD-Burners I see that they cant Burn DVD-Audio Discs.

  4. It seems to me like this would be an authoring problem, not a hardware problem. If I had to guess, I would venture that as long as you create the audio to specifications and use an authoring program that will let you burn the proper disc structure, you should be able to do it. I think that Nero might be able to accomplish this for you, but I'm no expert on using that program. Anyway, this link should help you with the specifications:

  5. thanks for the link. I guess my only question is, why when we goto the DVD Writers page, does it claim that none of these writers can read or write DVD-Audio discs?

The LaCie drive I just purchased, which is just a Pioneer DVR-104 in an external Firewire case, claims to be able to read and write DVD-Audio. The writing part I'm sure of, because DVD-Audio is just a UDF formatted disc, just like DVD-Video and DVD data. I cannot confirm that it will play DVD-Audio, because I don't own any software that plays back DVD-Audio (the content in the AUDIO_TS folder). Every DVD-Audio disc I own has a separate Dolby Digital mix of the album in the VIDEO_TS folder, which is essentially a DVD-Video containing a slideshow with a 2.0 or 5.1 (or both) mix. My copy of the BB King/Eric Clapton album Riding with the King also has a DTS 5.1 mix in the VIDEO_TS folder's VOBs. This is the mix I hear when I put this disc in my DVD player. I do not yet have a player capable of decoding DVD-Audio (the AUDIO_TS folder data).

What authoring software out there is available to encode audio into AOB files? My copy of Apple A.Pack has a setting to encode audio to "DVD-Audio" but I havent tried it, because I don't see an option in the accompanying software Apple DVD Studio Pro that says "click here to make a DVD-Audio disc."

  8. There was an interesting letter in, I think, the February Stereophile. Apparently, the authoring software for both SACD and DVD-A doesn't exist in an easy to obtain form yet. But, if you have a 24/96k stereo source file you want to put onto DVD-R for distribution to your friends, you can do it via DVD-V with an LPCM soundtrack. You just have to mux a single frame of video with the sound and there you go.

I'm not sure if this meets your needs since you didn't say what your intent of making a DVD-A would be. If it is to distribute 24/96k recordings, I think the DVD-V would be fine.

  10. sorry I'm late chiming in. If you use sonic foundry's soft encode to take six different tracks of audio- left and right front, left and right rear, center channel, subwoofer - it will encode it as a dolby digital 5.1 and then using nero it can be burned on a cdr that will play on most DVD players that are hooked up digitally with surround sound system. DO NOT USE IT ON ONE THAT IS HOOKED UP VIA ANALOG -- MY EARS ARE STILL RINGING.
hope I didn't damage my speakers. all you get is digital white noise

What the hell justifies at $1995 price tag for this? Even Apple, which is notoriously pricey, sells their high-end DVD-Video software (DVD Studio Pro) for only $995.

    Somethings not right here.
