Hello, I did a couple of searches first before I posted, found some info but not enough so here goes:
I have an All in Wonder Radeon using mmc 7.6, on a dual P3 500mhz Win2k system. I have two hard drives on my system, one a 9.1gig SCSI and another 4.5gig SCSI. As you can see I have no room to start a big capture out by using Huffy or other similar codecs, as I don't have the space on this system. I do however have at least 7 other computers on my 10/100 network with larger IDE drives. I do not want to switch out the hard drives on these systems, as they have their own uses. So I would like to capture some video, about 50 minutes long from VHS. To burn to a SVCD with. I want the best quality I can get without maxing out the hard drives at the same time, or can I record to the drives over the network safely? Or should I just wait to get a bigger drive?

I've always gotten better results from using an AVI format first and then going to mpeg using tpmg (etc....) BUT You could try real time capture to mpeg, however I'm not sure your computer will do it without dropping frames. I suspect it will depend on how much you dedicate one of the processors to it. Of course harddrive prices are getting pretty low.
As far as using one of the network drives, I don't think that is possible. Its a speed issue, the network connection just doens't have what it takes. Of course I could be wrong but I haven't worked with a network yet that would be capable. -
depends on the framesize you are capping at.
352*240 with picview mjpeg @ quality setting of 19/20 will easily fit on a 9GB drive w/ PCM 44Khz Stereo audio.
