I have a transparent png logo image that is quite high resolution and crisp when layered over a plain black or white background, but when I layer it over a portion of the actual mp4 video it becomes very bad quality and unusable. What am I missing here? I have tried in Openshot, MS Expressions (just to see if the software was the issue), Kdenlive, always the same.

  2. Best guess -- Still images such as a .png and solid color backrounds require very little bitrate to look good. That's because nothing changes in the scene. Actual video has a lot more information and requires a higher bitrate. Try raising the bitrate on your renders.

I am rendering in HD quality, the video looks perfect. The logo over video looks crappy in the editing SW even before I render it, making me crazy

  4. You can probably change the preview settings in your software (I don't use either of those.) Be aware that many systems can't handle full-quality playback during editing so you're always compromising between smooth playback/editability and image clarity. There are a number of threads about choppy playback in KdenLive.

  5. In what way does it look "crappy" ? Can you be more specific or post a screenshot of before/ after ?

For example is it limited to the edges (maybe an alpha interpretation issue ?) , is it blocky color edges (chroma subsampling ) ?

Well, I have already been paid for the video with just the logo over a white background at the end, I was just frustrated that I couldn't get it right over the video. I think I am close to getting it right now, thanks for all the ideas.......

  7. Clearly there is something else going on if it produces "bad quality" and "unusuable" over a video section. If it occurs in the preview before exporting, that certainly suggests that as well. If you export something lossless in RGB from that section, that will rule out export/compression issues or preview issues for certain . For example, export a PNG or BMP image. So that leaves various interpretation issues. For example, if you have one layer interpreted as interlaced, the program might be deinterlacing , that will seriously degrade the resolution. If want more help solving this, please answer the questions
