  1. Here is a PBS video:
    http://www.pbs.org/video/2365622662/
called East of Salinas. When I play the video with Tools>Adblock Plus> open blockable items
I can get the subtitle URL and video URL.
    The subtitle URL is:
    Code:
    http://ga.video.cdn.pbs.org/captions/independent-lens/4209c269-a2d5-4fb8-bae6-ddeb0025c222/captions/489831_Encoded.dfxp
which when converted to srt will be:
    Code:
    http://ga.video.cdn.pbs.org/captions/independent-lens/4209c269-a2d5-4fb8-bae6-ddeb0025c222/captions/489832_Encoded.srt
However, if I download these subtitles, I get a subtitle file that has English and Spanish, ie like this (see end of my post).
When I play the video directly from the PBS streaming website and click the CC button, only English captions appear.
My question is: How can I separate out the Spanish and have only English in the srt file (and display only English like when I press the CC button on live stream?). It would be very time consuming to go through 1000 subtitles and delete the Spanish ones. Notice in the srt file, the Spanish and English subtitles have exactly the same time code.

You could try Subtitle Edit. Use the menu: Edit -> Modify selection -> Rule: Even-numbered-lines, then delete

  3. Well, I was looking for some characteristic (like even/odd subtitles) to delete the Spanish subtitles. However, if you look at the complete subtitle file (use above srt link that I provided), you can see that sometimes the even subtitles are Spanish and sometimes English. So I am really, really curious when I go to the PBS stream:

    http://www.pbs.org/video/2365622662/
and play the video and press the cc (closed caption) button and see ONLY English subtitles, what method are they using to display only the English subtitles. I was thinking, since the English and Spanish subtitles have the exact same time code, maybe they are taking advantage
of the video window and the Spanish subtitles are down out of view off the screen. I have to tell you I spent about 70 minutes going through the complete srt file and I deleted all the Spanish subtitles. However that still doesn't solve my curiosity why the Spanish subtitles don't show up when I play the stream video and press the cc button. Biezom, Ponens, are you out there???
