I have two DV-AVI files. Both were recorded on the same mini-dv tape by the same camcorder. I want to join them and then use TMPGENC to encode them and burn a dvd as I always do with DVD Styler. . I have never before had to join two files until now. One of files was edited (cut out a small section) with VDUB 1.10.4. When I use VDUB to append them, I get this error:

The segment has a different set of streams.
I tried capturing these as dv type1 and type 2 and no difference.

I have tried Boilsoft Video Joiner to join the two files and get the same error. There must be something wrong with the edited file because I can join un-edited files.

Attached are screenshots of the two files from vdub File Information. First one is the one that was edited.

I also tried FreeVideoJoiner. That joined them but the program compressed them, even with the output set to avi.

  2. The last time I had this problem with virtualdub it was because of a codec difference with the sound of one of the files.
How did you edit the modified file with virtualdub (give every steps) ?
Direct Stream copy for audio and video?

    OK, here are the steps:
    1. Open video file (file 1)
    2. Direct Stream Copy Video, Audio is set at that default
    3. Open video file (file 2)
    4. Direct Stream Copy Video, Audio already set at Direct Stream Copy
    5. Append AVI Segment
    6. Save as AVI or Save as old format AVI. Saving either way yields same error.:

The way file 2 was edited:
    Open file
    Home
    play video
    End
    Save as AVI.

I cut off the first few seconds of the video. I never left vdub and didn't use any other app.

This is the tutorial I used. It works for files that are not modified as in cutting out a portion.
I can join file 1 to another file that has not been cut up. There must be something going on when vdub modifies a file.

  4. Join them first and then do the cutting.

  5. gspot and/or mediainfo(view=>text) might provide more clues to what the issue is

  6. It looks like the audio interleaving timing is different between the two files. Try setting audio to full processing mode in virtualdub. Since you are using PCM in and out there will be no loss of quality.

  7. Modify file2, make sure everything is set to direct stream copy, save as avi to file2_mod, close vdub

To join 2 files in virtualdub simply :
    launch vdub
    open file1
make sure everything is set to direct stream copy
    append segment, select file2_mod
    save as avi
This will append file2_mod at the end of file1, no need to open all files in vdbud first or scroll.

Joining (appending) the files in vdub and then cutting has worked.

Evidently, vdub is changing the saved cut file and won't let it be appended. I have attached Gspot screenshots.
First screen is the long file to be appended to, un-modified.
Second screen is the file that was cut in vdub. I don't know what to make of this data.

  9. Attachment 1 is showing a 12.1GB file with a note saying that there are 7.13 GB unneeded bytes at the end of file.
Something went wrong when capturing this video.
    What did you use?

Stoik video capture. It always works fine. I feed the output from the camcorder to a Canopus advc100 then firewire into PC.

File 1 is an hour long so 12gb sounds right.

  11. ok, a quick search shows that this is a bug in gspot. Safe to ignore.
