I have a friend who bought about 500 DIVX discs for like $100. He wants to know if he can either MOD the DIVX player he has or get at the video some other way.

I figure there has to be a way for him to watch those movies.

Ideally, on the set-top he has (old DIVX player) but even by ripping if necessary.

Can he use a program like smartripper with the old DIVX discs?

  2. Your friend was screwed.

IF his player is a DIVX player , then it only plays DIVX movies.

If he bought 500 DIVX discs, he just bought himself 500 coasters. There is no way to get at the movies that are on those discs. They are only unlocked by the player, but that player needs to "call" into a service center that no longer exists. They are not traditional DVD's because they have that "call back" feature built into them.

yup, he just bought $100 worth of coasters.
