Does anyone know of a standalone DVD or Blu-ray player that plays video files other than AVI files? My current Philips (#DVP5140) player only play AVI’s, which max out at a 1 GB size limit. I play the video files through its USB port. I am looking to play MP4 and FLV files as well in a similar way.

Just an FYI, I am not looking to convert videos or stream from my PC.

    Regards...John

Probably all current model Blu-Ray players from LG, Sony, Samsung, and Panasonic can play non-copy protected mp4 files (H.264/AVC video +AAC audio), with some restrictions. ("With some testrictions" means that there is a possibility that some individual file won't play because they were encoded with features the player's decoder does not support, or use the wrong type of audio.) Pick a model that you like and download the PDF manual from the manufacturer's website to see what it says about mp4 files.

I can't recall seeing any US model DVD player able to play mp4 files, and there are very few left that can play avi files.

[Edit] I downloaded the manual for the LG BP340 Blu-Ray player and it listed FLV and MP4 as supported containers. If that is too expensive, then pick another model and do your own research as I suggested above.

The cheap $60US Samsung set top BD player I have will play most MPEG-2, MPEG-4, JPEG, DivX HD, AVCHD, MKV, and WMVs from a USB port .
It's a couple of years old now, but I'm guessing there are similar one out there that are still inexpensive.

Most DVD players I've seen that have some support for .mp4-extension files, usually only allow what they support in an AVI, muxed into the .mp4 container. Basically, Xvid video and an MP3 audio stream.

If you're wanting actual MP4 support, your best bet is one of the Blu-Ray players with support for playing video files.
