Lets say in scenario A, you take a 30gb blu ray and shrink the main movie down to 8gb. Then later on decide to shrink this 8gb down further to 3gb.
In scenario B, you go straight from 30gb to a 3gb MKV. Would there be a difference in quality? Logic tells me scenario B will yield better quality?

All other things being equal, logic would say you're correct -- but why not just take a short sample and test it?

True, but as you know in this hobby, it's sometimes very hard to tell. Without even testing it, I already know I'll be satisfied with either scenario because the difference won't be much. I just want to know from a mathematically stand point if one method yields greater degradation.
