Funny enough I found excellent infos from google,
another stupid question, how to I know if a DVD is interlaced or not? -
Really good FAQ at http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html
Excerpt:
"DVD is specifically designed to be displayed on interlaced-scan displays, which covers 99.9% of the more than one billion TVs worldwide. However, most DVD content comes from film, which is inherently progressive. To make film content work in interlaced form, the video from each film frame is split into two video fields —240 lines in one field, and 240 lines in the other— and encoded as separate fields in the MPEG-2 stream. A complication is that film runs ..."As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. Where are the experts in this forum?? Hello Hallo... 8)
1)Are all Pal DVD`s using an interlaced MPeg 2 or are some progressive.
2)What would be the point of de-interlacing a PAL DVD when ripping to SVCD
3)What software would show me whether my video source is interlaced or progressive?? -
Most PAL DVD's RC2 are progressive, although DVD2AVI (press F5 to preview) tell you that it is interlaced. Preview the vob in dvd2avi or the d2v in TMPG few minutes. If you recognize interlace artefacts, it is intercaced, otherwise it is progressive.
MPEG-2 support interlaced material, so there is no reason to deinterlace if you are going for SVCD.
btw, all this is explained in the guides. Please read. -

If i remembered correctly, DVD is progressive, your player and TV will display them in interlaced form, but if you have a progressive DVD Player and progressive TV, it will display progressive. If you have a DVD player that is interlace and a tv that is progressive, it still would be interlace on your TV, your TV will switch to the interlace mode, and vice vesa.
But of course if you are talking about computer, your monitor is like a progressive TV, so, you may want to deinterlace your source (DVD) if you intended to view it on your monitor only, that will eliminate flickers.
