have I chanced upon some thing that is just meant for for specialists? I have spent hours with this and got nowhere. the ffmpeg was not liked by my AVG.
http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=20025 - I downloaded this I have no idea how to open it or work it.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdubffmpeginputplugin/ - I downloaded also I have no idea how to open it or work it.
All the you tube videos just say down load virtual dub and off you go I have spent all morning getting irritated.
why don't they make it so that it will accept a video. they are a simple mp4 files from a video recorder.
all i wanted to was to crop a video so that it was centered, I am amazed that this is such a complicated event.
    Sorry about the rant!!!

Does anyone know how I can just do this on movie maker?

  4. I don't know about Movie Maker but you could try Video To Video. It comes with a visual cropper.

I don't know why the ffmpeg plugin would be flagged by AVG, but can't you override that? (I'm not familiar with AVG.)

Otherwise, try the Directshow plugin, also linked on this site's Virtualdub page. That's never failed to open anything for me.

I am unsure what I am doing wrong. I downloaded the direct show plug in, put it in plugins 32, still can not get it to work

  9. crop a video so that it was centered
Isn't this what you want? You can do that with Video To Video without the need for VirtualDub and in any container/codec you want.

(And I guess Movie Maker only produce VMW without being sure)

I know very little about videos, I have been using movie maker to put videos on youtube. This particular video is not central, I wanted to make it central which I think is called cropping. I would like to do that and then put it back on movie maker where I can do the things that I need to do to it and put it on youtube. I don't know anything about all of these different codes and formates ect. I thought It might be an easy thing to do, but it certainly does not seem easy or uncomplicated. I think the format it is in at the moment is mp4

The correct way to open mp4 in Virtualdub is to use fcchandler's quicktime plugin. Install ffdshow and set H.264/AVC to libavcodec under VFW Configuration. Either through Start > All Programs > ffdsow > VFW Configuration or Virtualdub > Video > Compression > ffdshow Video Codec > Configure > Codecs.

I recommend downloading all fcchandler's plugins and aacacm, ac3acm and lameacm on the Virtualdub download page.
