I just got the XCapture-1 after many people claimed it is the BEST capture card available, with the only card that MIGHT top it being the Startech usb3hdcap.

So I plugged everything in correctly and tried the videokeeper software and I was very disappointed. While I could see 720p content just fine, the moment I crank it up to 1080p, it stops working. Screen goes black and my USB plugs turn off and on haphazardly. I was trying to record something even in 720p and after just a few seconds any software I tried from OBS to VirtualDub and it snags.

I really wish I could test it on another computer, since it might be because my PC is a little more than 4 years old now, but I am not the most tech savvy person in the world.

I'd rather not return\sell and figure out if I can save it, can anyone help?

What is source being captured ?

    crank it up to 1080p
If source is not 1080p and this change was via capture software this may simply be a restriction in the software package and or drivers ... other software might work with the device that allows upscaling.

Turn of "deep color option" for ps3

I did set up both my console (PS4) and the software for 1080 capture and nothing happened.

If you read the reviews for this device, the bundled Videokeeper2 software doesn't handle changes in resolution well. From http://sixfortyfive.com/streaming/xcapture1.html
    When using VideoKeeper2, your video capture will be cut off if the screen resolution changes for any reason, and you'll have to start a new capture on the new resolution. Other programs can handle a resolution switch without interruption, but if you happen to switch between progressive and interlaced signals, you may suffer from video/audio desync due to the 30fps conversion noted in the previous section;
Apparently you need to restart the capture or use alternative capture software.

What is your USB 3.0 controller?

    For the XCAPTURE-1
intel Corporation or Renesas (Renesas) Co., Ltd. of USB3.0 host controller is required.
Etron Inc., ASMedia Inc., FrescoLogic company, TI Corporation, VLI, Inc. (VIA, Inc.), we do not guarantee operation in USB3.0 host controller of AMD manufactured. From the Windows Device Manager Use of the personal computer before you purchase, please check the manufacturer's USB3.0 host controller....
In the personal computer that is equipped with AMD's CPU and chip set, or not some function operates stable even when using the USB3.0 host controller of Renesas Company, it may cause operation to become unstable.
    And StarTech USB3HDCAP
Not compatible with ASmedia, or Etron USB 3.0 host controllers. If your system has one of these non-supported controllers you can alternatively add a PCI-express USB 3.0 controller card such as the StarTech.com PEXUSB3S4V, PEXUSB3S400 or PEXUSB3S4.

There you go, it's ASMedia, that explains a lot now. So basically my computer is incompatible with the device and there is nothing I can do... well 300 went down the drain -_-

Most USB3 capture devices have restrictions on the USB3 controller. There is something that can be done with a desktop computer (install a compatible USB3 controller card), but if you have a laptop, then you are indeed stuck. You could always sell it on ebay and get some money back.
