  1. I'm looking for software that will convert .264 video format, not H.264! It's video from a security system and I can't find anything that will use this format, or even convert this format to AVI so I'm looking for software to convert .264 to avi. Thanks.

    .264 is H.264

Security cams conserve disk space by recording fewer frames per second usually with motion detection to separate normal noise from intruder detection. In other words they optimize the format to the task. The manufacturers of these devices have the option to make the resulting file playable as h.264 sped up or they can add various proprietary encryption to force you to use their software for playback.

  3. Well I figured a few things out. One of them is always check the CD that came with the security system, it may have the proper software with it. Thanks!

  4. I also found something else out, the supplied software doesn't work on my computer. I tried VirtualDub and Avidemux with no success. What software is the best to convert h.264 to AVI?

Both apps work well under win 7 64bit ... and the converter can handle files other converters can not handle.

    And it's raw .264, not h.264

  6. Security cameras often use non standard containers, and/or obfuscation, and/or encryption. Don't count on anything other than the software that comes with the camera to work with the video.

Check your .264 files with MediaInfo. Does it show AVC video? Can VLC play the files? Try using Mmg or Yamb to mux the files into an MKV or MP4 container. After that any media player should be able to play it -- if the video is really a plain h.264 stream.

As you've been told, these are the raw video. Not in any container like mkv or mp4 for example. You can try avctoavi to convert without re-encoding the video. Simply changing the file extension to .avi also may work. Make sure that you are really changing the extension and not just adding to the filename.

    .264 is H.264
H.264 is a family of video codecs. No container is implied.

.264 is the extension used for the raw video stream (containerless).

The raw .264 stream can be muxed into a container for playback (e.g. avi, mp4, TS, MTS).

Yes. But anyone can put any extension they want on any file. There's no guarantee that a file name that ends in ".264" is indeed a h.264 elementary stream. That's why the OP needs to positively identify what he has before he can proceed.

  12. btw. uploading a short clip might help others to figure out what sort of video you really have,..

  13. Just saying something "did not work" is nearly useless. How big was the resulting file? About the same size as the source? What does MediaInfo say about it? What did MediaInfo say about the source?
