I'm having the same problem I've always had.
I'm trying to combine a few videos into one. I choose the first, append the rest, select direct stream copy and save as .AVI.
Sometimes, this works fine.
Today, it's not working at all.
I've tried it about two dozen times, because usually it ends up working eventually.
No matter what I've tried, at some point the counter stops and it gets stuck on a certain frame.
Could be any frame.. 38, 178, 254, 482, etc. The highest I've gotten was 803.
So, I have to ask - why is this piece of software so broken, and.. is there any other program I use to append videos?
Thanks.

'AVI' is a broad church ie 'container'. I have not tried to join two videos in this program but I would have thought that using 'direct stream copy' both the videos would have to have the same characteristics - codec etc. - for this to work. You could hardly join a XVID to a AVC in this manner.
-
afaik, it works well only if none of the files being joined has cbr video/audio, the bitrates of video and audio are close to each other, all files have identical resolution, and the sampling rate for audio in all files is same.

Perhaps because the AVI files you're trying to join are broken
For the record: incorrectly-muxed files rarely can be concatenated without issues.
Videos that were trimmed incorrectly --- idem.
Videos with open GOPs ++ trimmed incorrectly == even worse. -
Actually, there's less problems with CBR than VBR. The avi's pretty much have to be identical - bitrate, resolution, sampling rates for audio, codec etc. If they get stuck on 1 frame, you can try VIDEO -> SCAN VIDEO STREAM FOR ERRORS before re-saving and trying to append.

avi-mux gui might also worth a try,...
