  1. Hello there
I was wondering if any of you inhere might be able to help out. I am capturing some old vhs-tapes using the Canapus ADVC100. I have tried a few diffrent programmes like scenalizer, which I quite liked, however every and each one of them only seem to have the option of saving in an avi DV file, either type one or type 2. I really need a programme that can capture in naked or "raw" dv, without rapping it in an avi container. Can anyone recoment such a programme?
    All the best

are you talking about .dv files? as in what is captured using a mac? wouldn't do you any good on a pc as they can't be used.

  3. You can reconfigure the captured files with ffmpeg, but how are you planning to use these these files that .avi is unsuitable?

  4. Why do you need to do this ? one option is to just re-wrap them into whatever you want (.mov, .dv, .avi etc....) eg. using ffmpeg, maybe mpegstreamclip

EDIT : oops I got beat to the punch by smrpix

  5. the files are simpley going to be used for long term high quality archival preservation files. The people i am dooing this for have asked for ".dv" files without any avi-rapping.

  6. Windows programs won't allow you to capture directly to .dv , so your only real option is to rewrap them to .dv or do this on a mac

even mac .dv files are in a "wrapper". but if a client wants it, then like pdr says you are going to have to buy a mac.

  8. Well that's good to know. Thanks! I was actually under the impression that there would be some way of creating .dv-files on a Windows machine, but now that I know otherwise, my only option really seems to be the rerapping like you suggest, as I am not really a mac person.
Another option, of course would be to let the Guys understand that the dv-avi is totaly sufissiont. Am I correct in asuming that the avi rapping really doesnt change or degradate the dv-stream coming from the ADVC? the avi is really only the rapper, and the dv inside is untouched? Well this is what I've herd/read, however as they insisted on.dv extension, I thaught I might as well ask around for other peoples opinion.
One positive thing about this is also that I would be able to continue using scenalyzer. A really simple but - to me at least - stabil programme that does its job very well!!

  9. This doesn't seem like the wisest way to go, but if that's what they want, after capturing with scenalyzer or windv or any of the other excellent tools:

ffmpeg -i input.avi -vcodec copy -acodec copy output.dv

You're changing absolutely no content in the video or audio stream, just the way they are wrapped.

  10. Yes, re-wrapping it as .dv, .mov , or .avi doesn't change the quality .

The people won't care if they were captured as AVI as long as they get something that works on a mac (that's likely why they are requesting .dv)

You don't have to use/buy a mac, just re-wrap it as .dv . You can batch remux them with ffmpeg (works on mac/pc/linux) . Similarly , if you are a PC person and get some .dv files - you can re-wrap them into AVI for windows platform to use (most PC programs won't accept .dv )

  11. I actually agree. Personally I'd just keep the files as scenelizer makes them as this is - to me at least seems totaly ok for digitizing old vhs-tapes! But Again, if they will not accept anything else I'll have to go with the rerap-option.

  12. The only programme that I've tried using that actually plays dv-files is the vlc-player, but others do not play them, as you correctly state in your post.
And yes, I see the reason now as to why they'd want .dv-files. If they're on a mac - which I'm not quite sure of, it makes sence!
Well, gotta have a talk with them Again, but for now I thank you for your helpful answers and links to tools ect.
    Have a nice day!

  13. Quicktime plays .dv files fine on a PC -- but we're beating a dead horse now. .avi is the most elegant option.

    mallanikkelsen,
Just as an aside, the Canopus AVDC100 does not capture raw video. There is compression hardwiare build into the device (about 5x). If you are truly interested in a raw capture a device such as BlackMagic Intensity does raw video capture. If you are doing HD capture with the BM Intensity the files get very large about 70Gb/hr. if I remember correctly. You will probably also need to capture across multiple HDs wired as RAID 0, on my system I require 3 7200rmp drives in a RAID 0 configuration.
