  1. I'm new to all this right now, and I'm overwhelmed by all the choices out there for hardware. I'm planning on building a system that is dual OS with Linux and Win2k or WinXP. What I'd like to do is

    1) convert my VHS-C home movies to VCD
    2) convert online video to VCD
    3) record TV from my (non-digital)cable to VCD

Any recommendations on hardware? I'm trying to keep things within a reasonable budget, ie video card no more than $100. Since things are going into a dual OS system, I'd like as much as possible to be able work under Linux as well.

    Thanks,
    Aran

  2. I am not sure of the full list of choices, but for a TV card, I have been using ATI TV Wonder PCI under both Windows and Linux without any problems. I use vcdimager under linux for creation of VCDs/SVCDs. I also burn my CDs under linux more often then windows. I do this because of habit now. I used to have an old 2x burner that windoze would usually get buffer underruns with, but since linux has been able to burn CDs better than windoze, I would burn my CDs under linux. I never got the buffer underruns under linux. Since CD burners have larger buffers and buffer underrun protection now, I occasionally burn CDs under windoze now. I haven't had time to focus on video stuff recently, so I haven't done too much under either OS with video. If you do get the ATI TV Wonder card and have trouble getting it working under linux, feel free to contact me and I will try to help.
