  1. Hi friend,

I have a DVD format iso made from a video editing application (converted from a 60 seconds' video).

This DVD only contains one vob file which has a duration of 60 seconds.
While Windows file explorer can show the correct duration

when I play that VTS_01_1.VOB using VLC player or SMPlayer, the player shows
incorrect duration, in fact when the progress reaches end, the last frame (at 60th second)
is shown. That means, this VOB does contain 60 seconds' content.

and if I use open Disc and specify the folder which contains VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS,
VLC player and SMPlayer CAN show correct duration.

I found old threads in this forum saying that a single VOB file may not contain duration
information, and only when played as a DVD video can duration be correctly calculated.

But my case is quite simple: just one VOB, one chapter. So could anyone tell me in this case,
is it reasonable that opening a single VOB file in VLC player/SMPlayer reports an incorrect
    duration?

    Thanks

It's a common issue with VLC. If the video plays for the entire 60 seconds, smile and get on with your life.

  3. Thanks hech,

I also tried to convert that VOB to a mpg file, and got the same result: Windows file explorer shows 1 minutes for that mpg file, VLC player shows 33 seconds (playing back is ok). is this also acceptable? thanks

Same here. Whether it's the original MPEG file or the resulting VOB file.....incorrect duration.
VOB files are not meant to played individually anyway, but when it BOTH the original MPEG and the VOB...it's a bug in VLC.
MPC is a good player too.

  5. Thanks hech

Yes, both VOB (play individually or play as DVD) and converted mpg can show duration correctly in MPC

  6. Hi hech

is it also true for seek?

I generated another DVD which contains 2 VOBs: VTS_01_1 and VTS_01_2 (each about 1GB). While VTS_01_2 (15 mins) totally couldn't be seeked in MPC, SMPlayer when opened direcly, when played as a DVD, I can correctly seek to any position in last 15 mins!

  7. My 2-cents:
When I need the correct time I use MKVMergeGui to re-mux to MKV.

Each VOB file in a DVD must be under 1GB. Every correctly authored DVD is that way. The 15 minute one means nothing.....it's normal.
What is NOT normal is playing individual VOB files. VOB files were never meant to be used outside of the VIDEO_TS folder.
