When one has a large mpg file and wants to make small clips, are the small clips double compressed after rendering. Triple compressed after uploading to youtube?
If so, maybe I should work with uncompressed AVI files?

Some MPOEG editors use smart rendering -- that is, they re-encode only the key frame and GOP segments involved, not the whole clip. The only such editor I've used are dedicated MPEG/HD editors from TMPgenc (not their encoders or authoring programs). Members might have more info on other "smart" editors.
Utube does has a way of fouling up stuff. Best to check their website for format and encoder recommendations. I've seen some (i.e., rare) good work on UTube, but most if it looks like garbage.Last edited by sanlyn; 25th Mar 2014 at 13:38.

if you have the original uncompressed avi then by all means use it. compress to high bitrate mp4 for upload to youtube at the end.
