I wanted to make a backup of my Patriots World Champions dvd, so I can have one here at school and one at home. I followed the guide on how to make an svcd from a dvd from the website: http://www.dvdripguides.com/. I dont have a dvd rom drive, so what i did was used a friends computer to rip the vob files with smartripper, and since were on a network here at school, I just sent the file that the vob files were in to my computer. I used dvd2avi, to make a d2v file, and wav that were readable in tmpgenc. I had forced film on, so that I could use the Ntsc svcdfilm option as my template in tmpgenc. I used 2 pass vbr so that it would be higher quality. So this took me a good 16 hours, to do one hour of footage. Anyway, the outcome was crap. There were little black lines and blurryness everytime something was moving fast. I dont know what I could have done wrong, I think I did everything right, but obviously I didnt. So I tried to make an Mpeg1 for a vcd instead of a Mpeg2 svcd, which I originally wanted. The vcd came out perfect, well as perfect as a vcd can be. There were no little black lines or blurryness, so the picture was a lot better. I have no dvd software on my computer, since I dont have a dvd drive, but i use Elecard Mpeg2 player to view mpeg2's. I thought maybe it was just the player that was making it look bad, but I burned it and played it on an apex 1500, and it looked the same. So what is it that I'm doing wrong? Is it because I dont have dvd software installed that i cant make proper mpeg2's from dvd's? I've made svcd's from divx avi before, and I didnt have any problems. How can I fix this, what do I need to do?? Why did it work perfectly for an mpeg1, when I just used CBR and it took me about 5 hours, as opposed to trying to make an MPEG2 with VBR which took me 16??

if the VCD turned out fine, it could be the fact that you used FORCED FILM in dvd2avi...
under dvd2avi's info box, what did it say about the video source?
was it NTSC, interlaced or FILM, progressive? -
ah...then there's your problem...if the source is NTSC, interlaced...then you can't use FORCED FILM in dvd2avi....
rather turn off forced film in dvd2avi and use the NTSC template in tmpgenc for SVCD...(not NTSC FILM template...just NTSC template) -
hrm...then u may have to turn forced film off in dvd2avi and use inverse telecine in tmpgenc

Thanks! that got rid of the black lines, but the picture is still blurry, the video quality of my vcd is better then the svcd. Any idea why?
