    Hi,

I have a problem. Everything on vd has been fine until yesterday when i tried to install the .net framework on my linux os.

That`s when the ---- hit the fan. my virtual C/ drive which was auto created vanished with all my windows apps in it.

Luckily, i thought having backed up my programs i would just re-install. Noooo...Of course not, nothing is that straightforward in the tech world.

I re-created the C/ drive and put vd in common files.

Installed ffdshow in vd and 200 pluglins in the plugins folder - oddly enough `178 with 6 failed ` was indicated.

I also installed the Xvid codec as strange as it may seem was missing in the video compression table ?

I then tried to convert an h264 video to Xvid and all was well ( so i thought ) , until i realized no numbers were moving in the little table converter , just the time.

The time just kept on growing to 6 hrs for a 300 mb conversion , so something was wrong.

There is the problem , every conversion or attempted conversion is the same - only the time scale moves whilst everything else remains static.

    Please advise. Thanks.

I do not know if this will help but I had issues installing updates of .net framework a few days ago.

When I tried to run some programs that depended on this they fell over.

The solution was to repair framework from the uninstall.

    Hi DB83,

Did you manage to install the .net framework in the end and which version was it ?

Do you use a linux os running windows programs through wine ?

    Thanks .

No. My system is pure windows.

Like I said, I had to repair .net framework (version 4) and then the dependent programs did run.

My issue was that the updates would not install and actually broke it. I offered my suggestion just in case it helped.

Ok, but i think i will update my os to it`s latest build so i might get the .net framework to run on my linux.

    Thanks for the suggestion though.

Another remote possibility to keep in the back of your mind is damage to VirtualDub's Registry storage. Recently mine stopped working without anything else having been added or removed. I tried absolutely everything, from reinstalling VirtualDub to toggling each and every one of its settings in desperation, but it wouldn't work.

However, I realised some settings survived the reinstall and went looking for persistent configuration storage. I found them at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VirtualDub.org. After deleting that key, everything was fine!

    Cheers,
    Francois

    Hi Francois,

I was searching but couldn`t find this post.

I installed a new VD but i can not find that file/location -

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VirtualDub.org.

I looked in user but nothing .

Thanks though - at least you solved the problem at your end and it is a shame i can`t try that work-around. DAMN !!

In case I confused you, that location refers to a Windows registry entry:

(the status bar shows the full path to the entry).

    Hope this helps!

I thank you for your help Francois , i tried to locate VirtualDub.org but it is not in my VirtualDub installation folder. I guess for a last ditch effort, i will get rid of the wine install i have now ( 1.3 ) and re-install wine 1.2. Failing that i will try `PlayOnLinux` and then `Crossover`.

    I will update what happens.

    Thanks again.

It's not a folder. It's in the Registry. I don't know if Wine supports RegEdit.

    Perhaps this key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Freeware\VirtualDub

Thanks for all these tips but they are not working and i have tried my own theories at getting the damn program to work .

    I think it`s time for yet another re-install .

There must be some incompatable/broken packages in my os.

I just can`t figure this one out.

  13. If you're trying to install .NET 3.5/4.0 on a 64 bit Linux host, all I can say is...

    ...good luck.

Look for something like regedt32.exe or regedit.exe in \Windows or \Windows\System32 and run it. In the tree view on the left, navigate to the location I showed you above (or similar as suggested, e.g. VirtualDub instead of VirtualDub.org), and delete.

If you can't find reged*.exe, this fix isn't available on your system, unless you can find and use another registry editor.

    Cheers,
    Francois

Nop, it`s a 32 bit and the new distro has .NET 3.5 and 4.0 pre-installed.

At last i found regedit.exe and it was in my Windows folder.

I deleted VirtualDub.org and ran the program again......nothing - not even ( as before ) can i play a normal .avi video.

I really don`t think the re-install of my os will help.......but i will try again.

I will keep on searching .

Cheers Francois, good information but without success.

I looked at your profile and saw "linux 8.04" as your OS. That's not 100% helpful as linux is a generic term. Which distro are you using?

The reason I'm wondering about this is that my first instinct with something like this would be the support forum for your distro, and also the wine forums. This really sounds more like an OS or wine problem than a vdub one.

If it's ubuntu 8.04 ... which is what pops to mind for me ... that's an lts version which reached its end of life / support recently. I googled "linux 8.04" and that's all I came up with anyway. Ubuntu has fabulous tech support on their forum ... better than a lot of support you'd pay for ... but I'd still upgrade to 12.04 at least if ubuntu is what you're running.

One thing though. If you're using gnome 2 based ubuntu I wouldn't necessarily recommend the ubuntu unity gnome 3 version if it's on 5 year old hardware. It's very bloated and slow, and you can't properly turn off compositing. I've tried all the non specialized ubuntu versions except lubuntu and the biggest mistake I made was first installing the unity version. It stinks. There have been a lot of complaints from long time users. Unity was the best thing that ever happened to Mint.

I use the kde ubuntu version. It definitely has the best video playback rendering performance if you tell it to turn off effects in full screen mode. Unity/compiz has that option but it doesn't work very well.

The other thing I'm wondering is why you're trying to run virtualdub in linux under wine ... and wine can be very problematic ... when there are linux video editors/encoders that are as good or better. And you don't have to dick around with wine, which is, again, very buggy. Just how attached to vdub are you?

Hi, i changed distro, i am now on lucid 10.04, i will update my profile shortly. I run a multimedia center which came with a special kubuntu package .

I need VirtualDub as i use gifs in presentations for work. It`s very handy and they are fast to make , just mark your in/out points , resize and decimate by 2. An incredible piece of software which is sadly lacking in linux and please correct me if i`m wrong.

Yes, there`s Gimp , but for making gifs it`s nowhere near as good as VirtualDub. I have a potential solution but it is a multi-step process , i would rather have a program that does what VirtualDub does - does it exist and without using wine ?

    I am open to suggetions.

  20. I'm to sure about AviDemux's GIF abilities. You might look into that.

I don't use gif processing myself, so I can't recommend anything in particular. I like avidemux generally though.

Also, kdenlive, openshot, there are other good linux ones. Try the tools section on the left.

Or maybe something besides wine? How about virtualbox?

  22. I didn't see any GIF output options in AviDemux but it apparently can output a series of PNG images. It shouldn't be hard to convert those GIF.

I'd still suggest you try the ubuntu and wine forums.

Jeez, I looked and he's 100% right. I didn't realize 10.04 support had ended already. Maybe you don't want a gnome 3/compiz based desktop, which is quite understandable.

But I don't think that would justify installing a version that's no longer supported. I.e. among other things no more security updates. What the hell is the point of using linux/unix ... which is the most secure OS there is, period ... with no security updates?

What I would suggest if you don't want a gnome 3 shell ... and no gnome 3 based system will ever grace my machine ... remember, Linus Torvalds won't use it ... I'd try xubuntu or kubuntu 12.04 lts. KDE is actually faster than xfce, much more powerful, and doesn't use much more RAM.

Or maybe linux mint 13 Mate, which uses a fork of gnome 2. I've tried it and it's not bad if you want a similar interface. But the tech support is nowhere near ubuntu's.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'd try looking for a linux solution for what you want to do. Wine is just plain unreliable ... google it to see the small list of programs it's considered to work properly on.

And I suspect video programs would be among the worst for wine compatibility. Digital video is just too hardware dependent. You're missing a layer of abstraction. I still think you'd find a lot more info on the wine forums.

As suggested elsewhere VirtualDub is probably missing some dependency. Therefore in my view an essential stop on this journey is to check the VirtualDub forum.

Search there for related problems and post your experiences if necessary.

There's always the MATE desktop. Linux Mint ships a MATE version, but you could always add MATE desktop to an Ubuntu install through PPA's.
It's the closest approximation of the old Gnome2 and my personal desktop of choice. Hopefully it has enough traction to keep development going for a few years more.

The OP could check there, but I wouldn't expect much linux support from a windows application. That's another problem with wine. Even if you're running a real paid pro app like photoshop, with serious tech support, they won't support it if you're running it in wine. That's why I didn't mention it.

I already mentioned mint, and I used to run Mint 13 Mate on my netbook. It is a pretty good interface but unfortunately it ran even slower than Windows 7 Starter did .

Plus, mint, while mostly based on ubuntu, has pitiful tech support compared to ubuntu's.

I've installed multiple ubuntu desktops but just because I wanted to try different ones before settling on one and reinstalling. It's actually not a good idea to have more than one desktop shell. They tend to conflict and cause hard to diagnose problems.

Actually a better idea I read on the ubuntu support forums would be to run it from a live CD or USB drive. That'd be the safest way.

But install a desktop from another distro on a ubuntu machine? Are you kidding? Then you won't support from either ubuntu or mint.

To the OP ... please start reading the ubuntu support forums where you can get some intelligent opinions.
