Can't get audio from my new TV to my stereo with no RCA inputs

So I bought my former roommate's TV to replace my smaller one, but unfortunately it doesn't have a 3.5mm jack like my smaller, cheaper, but newer TV. I want to watch video from a laptop via HDMI, and get the audio to come out of my Yamaha stereo:

The stereo doesn't have an RCA input, it only does has inputs for Ipod, usb, cd, fm, and "portable" via a 3.5mm headphone jack. I bought this cable thinking it would fix my issue, but I'm still only getting sound out of the TV speakers. When I go into settings and turn the TV speakers off (it says to do so when using external speakers off) I get no sound at all. My TV model is panasonic tc-p46s2 , any help appreciated.

Unfortunately, both your devices are designed in a hostile way, to make it hard to connect anything unauthorised to them.

According to the manual at

(p 41), the only audio output is "optical digital audio".
I don't see any RCA output. Or even a headphone jack.

And your stereo only has 3.5 mm analog input.

So, you need a converter from optical digital to analog.

Might be better to look for a used stereo or amp with optical input.

Or, if the source is your laptop, connect the headphone jack from that to the stereo.

Or disable the TV speakers by internally disconnecting them. Not the best solution...

The source is my laptop via hdmi, but when I plug the 3.5mm from it to the stereo nothing happens, the audio still comes from the TV. Is there a way to send just the video to the TV via HDMI and the audio through a headphone jack?

I also notice that the RCA ports on the TV are input not output, and you are correct it seems digital output is the only method. That converter doesn't seem to suit my needs though because it converts from digital to RCA, when I need digital to 3.5mm. Either that or figure out how to get the sound from the laptop instead.

No the device posted has a line level output with the connector you want.

Even if it didn't have anything but RCA (x2) analog outputs, you can find RCA->3.5mmMini adapter cables everywhere.

I agree with what AlanHK has already suggested. Checked both manuals, it's the only way to go, shy of getting a different receiver.

That was just an example, but I expect most converters would also be to RCA. Just plug in the cable you already have for RCA/3.5 mm. The cable is very cheap, $1 here.

Probably. You need to give some details about the laptop.

Headphone jack out of laptop direct to PORTABLE port on receiver may not work because the Headphone jack likely isn't line level.

Sometimes there is a setting in BIOS or Windows, to make the jack line rather than volume. Otherwise, it usually works acceptably if you adjust the volume on the PC to a medium level, too high gets distortion and clipping, too low gets hum and other noise. Many computer speakers connect via the headphone socket, often it's the only audio output. Since the amp here only has 3.5mm input, it probably is intended to do that.

Size doesn't always matter when it comes to desired features. I'd suggest hitting your local thrift shops to find a deal on a receiver or cables that will suit your needs .... it may be far cheaper than buying a new T.V. or converter.

And it is working great! Thanks for that suggestion, bummer I had to pay an extra $30 but just happy that it is working now. Cheers! Oh and it does have a 3.5mm jack, so it was unnecessary for me to by the RCA to 3.5m converter cable.

I am happy to see that you made a choice you are happy with. Giving advice only goes as far as the person asking really wants. When you get down to it you just have to find how to best fill your need and go with it.
