Something has gone wrong with my Vegas Pro 9. When I try to capture 29 minutes of video from a DVD it dies usually after 20 or so minutes. I get msgs like "invalid argument". Where do I find the latest update? This didn't do it. <http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/updates>. Win 7. 64-bit, version 9.0e, Build 1146.

that's the place to get them. the one you listed is the final 64bit version. maybe try the 32 bit version - build 1147

  3. what do you mean "capture from dvd" ?

    what is this "dvd? "

    standalone dvd recorder unit ?

retail dvd ? if so, did you remove copy protections?

you can try something else like dvd decrypter

I think it might be best to uninstall Vegas and re-install it rather than go to 32-bit. I wonder what it costs to upgrade?

I'm using a Panasonic DVD player that is attached to a Handycam TRV480. The latter is plugged into my PC via firewire. No need to worry about copy protection.

Failure occurs very close to 26 min each time. To get this over with, I'm going to stop it at 25 min, and save the capture. I'll then capture from 25 to 29, and combine the two segments.

rather than using vegas to capture, use winDV. click the options button and set it up like this to capture the video as 1 file.

  6. Huh? Why are you doing it that way passed through the handycam? Why don't you just rip the DVD ? The quality will be better, filesize smaller.

Just stopping the capture at 25 min resulted in the same problem. No captured video.

It's my understanding that ripping leaves a lot of debris on a PC.

I just tried WinDV and got odd results for 29 min of recording--the length of the source. Two files appeared that were of equal size. 2.74G, and 12.5 min long. They were duplicates. A third file appeared that was 4+ min long. They all went into my download folder, which contains the WinDV.exe file. I stopped the recording at 29 min with a pause. I think I happened to do it twice in trying to find some way to find Save. What am I missing about the operation of the program?

look closely at all the settings in the picture i posted. the max avi size needs to be what i posted.

pdr is right though. why are you re-digitizing a dvd. just put it in the computer drive and copy the video_ts folder to the hard drive. then use something like vob2mpg if you want it all as 1 mpg file.

pdr? video_ts file? Never heard of vobmpg. I have no idea what the size will be. 1 mpg? 1G?

I ran into trouble with WinDV per attachment. "error, error" Same as yours above.

Is that the reason you're doing it this way ????

You're going from digital=> analog => digital. That analog stage is lossy, and you will have more noise. Not only that , you are incurring addition losses through DV encoding . Ripping a DVD is a direct digital copy. Perfect. The way you are doing it now will result in a file 3-4x larger , lower quality, and the transfer will be slower

The "debris" you can delete afterwards, yes there are some accessory files when you rip a DVD, but even with that "debris", it's still 3-4x times smaller with better quality. A true digital copy of the original.

If you only need a section, use something like DVD shrink to mark in/out a section.

I just captured the first and second half of the video, and put them end to end in Vegas. All I need to do now is make the DVD, which should be easy.

Well, I'll worry about lossy and ripping another time. This was supposed to be a short project. Ha! I see that in 2010 I actually downloaded DVD Shrink. Never installed it. I guess I solved whatever problem I was pursing another way. It was a friend who put me on the DVD+Handy Cam track. Well, thanks for hanging in there. BTW, the source was a 30 min movie from the 1930s.

max avi size needs to be 1000000.

pdr is PoisonDeathRay. copy the video_ts folder off the dvd. the max for a single sided dvr is 4.365 GB. dual layer about twice as much. the vobs contain the mpeg-2 and you can connect the pieces into one mpeg-2 with the program "vob2mpg".

Why donīt you "Import" the DVD directly in Vegas? Vegas can import a non-protected DVD directly to timeline.
