I strapped a camera to the strap of my backpack and set it to take a picture every second. I put together a timelapse with VirtualDub and uploaded it to YouTube. To my surprise, it offered to stabilize the video, and the results were fantastic.
Does anyone know what they use to automatically stabilize the video? Is a simple 1-click tool available on the desktop?
I am currently messing around with deshaker, but the results aren't quite as good as YouTube.

The biggest problem with Gunnar Thalin's DeShaker filter is the rolling shutter compensation which doesn't work too well. Otherwise it works pretty well. If your video is as skaky as that Youtube sample be sure to use high values like 10000 for the motion smoothness settings.
One problem with deshaking is that motion blur isn't fixed. That makes the video look really odd since the video blurs for no reason at all after deshaking. It often looks better before deshaking. Youtube was very careful to pick a video that didn't have any motion blur for their demo.Last edited by jagabo; 14th Jan 2013 at 17:52.

@Selur, thanks for the blog link, I'll check it out.
@jagabo, I want to stabilize a timelapse, so on a bright day, I'll be dealing with very little blur.
@Baldrick, I actually did that already, because youtube didn't like me using a copyrighted song in the background. That made it unplayable on my android tablet. The quality was alright. -
I added some comments to my earlier post. It sounds like you don't have too much rolling shutter problems either. Did you try using high motion smoothness settings? Also try using the "Ignore pixels" settings to avoid deshaking based on parts of the picture you don't want taken into account. For example, if there's a tree waving at the side of the picture you don't want the deshaking based on the tree. So use the ignore pixels option to eliminate that edge of the frame from the deshaking calculations.
