Mission/Objectif:
Save time and aggravation while preserving rendering speed while processing video.
Use Windows 7 Home Premium.
Every time I start-up the computer, I maximize available memory by manually shutting down literally dozens of processes that would slow me down considerably otherwise. I do not need any of these for editing video.
It’s not efficient and a real pain in the neck to kill process trees (sometimes several times over) before the operating system finally decides to stop regenerating them every time I boot up the PC!
I do not want to trash them, especially since some of them are security and internet processes, only to disable them by managing them so that they won’t automatically start-up until I allow it.
Given the above, what are my options to achieve this?
Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Would care to elaborate on that?
I know it exists however I'm not familiar with it.
Thanks -
Also check:
Start -> All Programs -> Startup
Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows Features On Or Off -
One thing you can do in msconfig is diagnostic startup. This provides a bare minimum of services and programs
necessary to run the OS. -
You might also try autoruns. That program lets you look at various startup entries under a number of categories (or a complete list), and you can disable (or even delete, if you want) any of the entries by clearing the checkbox for that entry.

Thanks Gents,
I will get right on this and report back tommorrow or so.
Time to get some rest.

Does Win 7 have "safe mode"?
That should stop just about everything unnecessary, and you can just reboot normally to get all your processes running. -
I use CCleaner + Spybot (advanced mode) + msconfig + Admin Tools/Services. (Some overlap/dupes)
Allows pretty complete control over how lean & mean you can make you fighting machine.

A bit more advanced. Head over to blackviper.com and use the "Safe" mode choices to turn off unnecessary services. I've done this to every PC I've owned or had administiive privileges to over many years and find it noticably speeds things up.
May be same functions that CCleaner / Spybot, Cornucopia suggests, but I really liek the detailed explanation of what each service does or doesn't do. -
Thank you! That's a very descriptively detailed & exhaustive list. I can use that, and will be adding it to my favorites.

Update:
Made very good progress.
Almost there.
Now for the last holdouts!
Want to kill these for good:
WUAUDT
WMIADAP
WMPRVSE
WMPSHARE
I use Windows 7 Home Premium.
Thanks -
I think you can disable most those in the Services section of the Computer Management dialog.

if i may offer a different solution, add more ram, there's no way that you have that many background processes running that they use up so much ram that it negatively affects the rendering speed of video on your pc, i really doubt that you could free up a couple of hundred megabytes of ram, and if a couple of hundred megabytes of additional used ram makes that big a difference, then you definitely need to add more ram.

i think its also about the op's cpu resources/threads. the less of these being used the better. i mean, do we really need all these resource eating entries ? i have currently 53 processes running under xp home. i dont' know why i need them all running for what i am doing. its a waist, though i blaim most of issue with any form of antivirus/mailware/etc. i'm developing a lot under delphi lately and noticed a big change in the response times (when running the app and comming out of it back into the IDE) it is very sluggish. never used to be. i suspect it is due to a new change that all these antivirus/mailware utilities are running on todays system. i notice this on both my home and work pc's. i think with respect to op, he has noticed a change in the way things are in his enviornment. it seems more and more junk is being added to taskmgr list these days.

Also for programming purposes through a IDE (like eclipse, VS,..) it normally helps to put the whole development tools&temp folders onto an ssd.

there's no way that he's using rdram, rdram had to be used in matched pairs, i.e. 2x256mb or 2x512mb, there's no matched pair that results in 1.25gb of ram, his computer is using sdram; along the same reasoning it can't be maxed out, if he has 2 ram slots and he's running one 1gb stick and one 256mb stick (as is the most likely scenario), then he can up the ram total to 2gb.
@OP: is your chosen screenname an accurate reflection of the type of camera you use? i google Canon GL2 and came up with this:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/camcorders/professional_camcorders/gl2
also, are the listed system specs on your profile accurate? running Windows 7 Home Premium on a P4 with 1.25gb of ram is ludicrous, i'm surprised you were even able to install that OS on that hardware, with such an old system you should really be running win 2k or xp home at the most, no wonder your system is sluggish.
furthermore, i would submit to you that if you can afford a $2800 camera then you can afford a reasonably modern system system on which to do your editing.
if upgrading hardware is not an option and you are hell bent on running a modern OS on a decade old computer, perhaps you should look into a nice lean Linux distribution, even though i consider Linux to be a half-assed OS all you're editing is DV, there's plenty of apps on Linux that can handle that and one of the leaner distros will run like stink on a monkey on that old hardware, especially if you custom recompile the kernel. -

for the most part, i think the whole "background services" thing is an over-hyped boogie man, with the following exceptions:
1) windows indexing service, i turn that off in ever computer, i have noticed that it tends to slow everything down, not to mention the constant noise from the hard drives.
2) windows defrag, ever since Vista MS had it running in the background in order to maintain performance, but all it does is actually kill performance.
3) avg free, this is the most resource hungry antivirus i have ever seen, it makes even my 3770k feel like a Camry stuck in mud, what a piece of shit, and don't get me started about it's initial "optimizing" scan.
4) Firefox, all the developers associated with this browser should be shot and hung on pikes as a warning to all other browser developers, open up multiple tabs and watch as it sucks up the ram, same with chrome.
other than those, i've never seen any benefit from shutting down other services. -
I do apologize. I got a newer machine a couple of years back.
My current system specs are as follows:
1 ( main) and 2 (video) gig hard drives onboard.
12 gigs of ram. going to be 16 in the future.
Intel i7 2nd gen 2600 3.4 ghz CPU
Nividia GE Force GT 440 GPU
Windows 7 Home Premium -
Just a thought.... one of the things I have noticed over the years is the number of BHOs and Tool Bars that load on boot. Many users don't keep track of them and they will slow your entire computer big time. I do not allow even one to run on my box, and all my Windows scores are over 7 (except for my pokey 1TB hard drive which pulls the average down). Get Hijack This from the Trend Micro website, and it will list all the BHOs and Tool Bars loading on boot.
