Hi. Would greatly appreciate help with something simple (I think).
I have a Canon XA10 that splits videos while clips are still in it. This is a pain since I'd like to not have to leave clips in camcorder memory until I decide what needs splitting.
Can Videostudio X5 split a video without rendering and losing quality - as the camcorder can? Does joining require rendering?
thanks

I think so. It's often called "smart rendering". Try google for videostudio smart rendering avchd and you will see that some mention that it should work.
But try the free trial first. -
Thanks for the reply. Already have x5 installed. There was a post on the corel user forum by the site admin on this subject. He was referring to x4 when he said
For what it's worth, I have consistently recommended for a couple of years now that people NOT use SmartRender with either HDV or AVCHD. It would appear to be related to too many problems users experience, particularly with AVCHD. That being said, X4 -- for me at least -- appears to render AVCHD much faster than did HDV, including with SmartRender enabled, and moreover it appears to work (for me) with none of the reported errors of past versions.
Do you think this should work in x5? I've ordered a book on how to use VS x5 and would like to know if it is worth the effort of figuring out how x5 is supposed to do this.
The very limited x5 online help doesn't even list smart rendering. Do you know if smart rendering would work or is better in x5? -
I do not have x4 or x5. But the option exists in other ulead/corel products so I would expect it to be there now.
You find the option when you come to save/create your video file. There should be an 'options' button and 'smart render' should be on - 'ticked' - by default.
Be aware that it only works if you make no changes to the quality(bitrate) of the video nor apply any filters etc.
