any small pc connected would be good but what about a tv with usb playback

or if you have a screen already try one of these(£15 ish), connects to hdmi or phono(red-white-yellow)
make an add with editing software or slide show(movie maker from windows) & play from sd card or usb pen drive

LG (http://www.lg.com/us/commercial/lg-ezsign-tv) and probably some others make products specifically for digital signage. These are different from the standard consumer TV. For one thing, they may include software to create the signage, and are designed to make it more difficult to steal the USB stick that contains the signage when the TV is installed in a public place.

thanks for quick reply... i've now found 2 open source software systems xibo and Concerto that i'm going to fool around with...
I'm also going to mess around with just a plain old HD powerpoint slide system on the TV
Can anyone also recommend an LED 42"+ that has a matte screen for no reflections? this way people in the cafe can see the screen and not harsh reflections? -
thanks usually_quiet! i'll check that out... prob don't need to have an extra PC running for that either.

I second an LG, I have an LG LCD and it has built-in software that will play slideshows or a static image from a USB drive. LG's have a matte screen and most have an IPS screen for excellent off-axis viewing, most have VGA input as well.
I own this one:
