  1. I am trying to cut up a .m2v file with Cuttermaran. I first demuxed my mpeg (movie clip) file using Project-X_0.91.0
I have the part of the video cut and am now ready to save my new video. I choose cut video and audio and it seems to save the video just fine but I get errors when it tries to save the audio part of it. Here is a sceen shot of my error.

Here is the log file I get every time I try to mux it all back together.

Is this a recording from an over-the-air source? If so, I know from personal experience that Cuttermaran has problems coping with with transmission errors in the video and audio streams. Such errors are very common, and the only program I have tried for editing which can successfully cope with them is VideoReDo.

  3. The original file was a .tivo file. I then used direct show dump to get it into an unprotected .mpg (movie clip) file.

...and is the TiVo recording from an antenna or from digital cable? Either way it could be a transmission error. Digital cable tends to have fewer of them than over-the-air, but they still occur.

The file is from digital cable (comcast) over cable cards in the tivo. I was able to use "MPEG video wizard dvd" and it worked great!
Only down side is that it costs $100.00 after the trial period. F that. I really need to find some freeware

No transmission erros then. Cuttermaran just couldn't mux the HD file.

I have tried nearly all the freeware MPEG-2 editors as well a number of payware MPEG-2 editors. Cuttermaran is the only freeware MPEG-2 editor which is frame accurate and capable of smart rendering, but as you discovered it is not a good editor for HDTV recordings. However, all the editors I tried, including Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD, had problems dealing with transmission errors, except for VideoReDo.

VideoReDo Plus is frame-accurate, uses smart rendering and can compensate for transmission errors. It has been worth every penny of the $50 I paid for it. The user interface looks like it was designed by Fisher-Price, but it works. $100 will get you VideoReDo TV Suite H.264 with a prettier user interface which supposedly works with TIVO files from TiVo to Go, edits H.254 video files, and authors DVDs.

  7. I got videoReDo H.264 and it works awesome except for one thing. When I play back my cut up show I get a weird green screen for maybe 10 or 15 frames inbetween every spot that a commercial was removed. Have you ever encountered this? Any ideas on how to go about fixing it?
Thanks again for all your suggestions.

I use VideoReDo Plus to trim unwanted bits from the beginning and end of files and always remove commercials manually. I never saw the problem you describe. Did you remove commercials manually or use the auto detect and removal feature?

[Edit] I didn't realize it earlier, but VideoReDo Plus apparently can import TIVO files as well. http://www.videoredo.com/en/SpecificationsPlus.htm

If that is true and you don't need to edit H.264 files or author DVDs, you can use it and save $50

  9. The version of VideoRedo I got is "VideoReDo TVSuite version 4.20.7.629
It does open my .tivo files which saves me a step and is great. The way that I edited out the commercials was to just open the tivo file and then pick the start and stops of commercials and then used the cut selection. When I was going through editing it the first time it kept giving me errors saying that it could not seek forward when I would click the "forward 2 minutes" button. It told me to do a "quick stream fix". I did that and I did not get the original error anymore.

Do you mean that running Quick Stream Fix on your TIVO file before editing eliminated the problem of green frames at the cut points?

I do use Quick Stream Fix frequently. Quick Stream Fix helps when editing captures from a digital tuner of some kind because the frames are sometimes out of sequence, or there are other errors in the stream. Maybe that is why I don't recall seeing the green frames.

I haven't tried not seeing the green bars without doing a quickstream fix yet. I have tried to save it as different formats but still get the same result. I'm gonna play around with it again tomorrow and if I figure out a fix or what caused it I'll post it.

Do you have any good results with the "ad-detective scan"?

    (EDIT)
It appears that as long as I start my cut on a frame that still is displaying some sort of video and end my cut the same way it pretty much deletes the green frames. I wanted to have a more smooth transisition into and out of where the commercials should be though. I was hoping to set the start and stop points on frames that were solid black.

I chopped up the video again but this time I used direct show dump on my tivo file before editing it, but got the same result (green frames)

I haven't been able to re-create your problem with green frames, but I have different hardware and software. I don't have a TiVo or CableCARD tuner. I record using a TV tuner card or a DVD recorder. I have VideoReDo Plus, not VideoReDo TVSuite H.264. VideoReDo TVSuite H.264 may be the problem. There are some reports similar to yours in VideoReDo's forums from people using VideoReDo TVSuite H.264. Download the trial for VideoReDo Plus and see what happens when you edit a TIVO file.

I tried ad-detective scan, but didn't find it to be accurate enough. I always edit recordings manually.
