  1. I realize that backing up a blu-ray disc is a multi-step process and many things can go wrong in any of the steps. However, if the blu-ray disc plays fine in my BD burner used to burn it but doesn't play in my standalone BD player, would anyone agree that the most likely culprit is the standalone BD player? Specifically the video doesn't show up (black screen) but I can hear the audio fine. I'm thinking maybe the BD player is intentionally blacking out the screen?

I used DVDFab to rip it, BD Rebuilder to encode it, then ImgBurn to burn it to disc. All 3 programs said their steps were completed successfully. And again, the disc plays fine in the drive used to burn it (an LG) but the video won't display on the standalone BD player (a Sony). Does anyone have any input on this? Would changing the standalone BD player help? Or does anyone think it could be something else?

    Your basic process seems sound.

If it plays fine with a BluRay app, not just playing the .m2ts file (though you don't state what you re-enconded to...), then I would say it's either, or a combination of, the type of media being used and the standalone. Sony tends to be the most picky about what media they'll play.

    More info might be helpful:

    - What did you encode to.
    - What make and model standalone you have.
    - What make and type of media did you use.
    Have a good one,

  3. For encoding I selected Full Backup (target size bd-25). It creates 2 folders: BDMV and Certificate. I burn those 2 folders into the disc using ImgBurn. For make and model of standalone it's a Sony BDP S780.

  4. I just read in the BD burner manual that its recommended media manufacturer for BD-R is Sony and Panasonic. I wonder if using those would make a difference.

What version of DVDFab did you use to rip with ?
I ask because there were a couple of versions, not to long ago, that screwed up bluray rips & they would play fine on your PC but choke on a standalone.

When you used DVDFab did you select FULL DISC, as in the full 30,40 gigs to rip to your hard drive ?

Then you used BDRB to encode full backup to BD25 ?

I would never use either of those media "brands" for bluray, I doubt anyone else here would either.

I use Verbatim most of the time & have burned around 50 Optical Quantum BDR 25 and they worked perfectly fine.

Also I always burn at 2.4x, it may take awhile, but what's the hurry ??

There is much more short and to the point information you have left out.

What are you burning with, what media are you using, what speed, etc.

Please check with the local electronics dealer whether that disc is playing well with other brand of bluray players also. Because Sony has got allergy even during vcd and dvd's days recordable most of them were not able to play or get recognize by this outgoing brand.

I ripped many BDs with DVDFab, re-encoded to BD25 using DVDFab and then copied to BD25 discs. No problems and all play well in my Sony BD player. Here are the source and dests. Always select Full Disc

BD50 to disk : source BD drive, dest HDD, select BD50
disk to disk : source HDD folder where BD50 is, dest another HDD folder where BD25 should go (select Bd25 mode)
disk to BD25 : source folder where BD25 is, dest BD drive
