I am looking for a video editor to do some fairly basic edits (though, more than cut/join) The source file is MKV (AVC/AAC), and I would also like to output to MKV (same codecs). The source video is about 15 minutes and I only need to do a few edits such as a brief video/image overlay, and a few transitions. The total video time of edited material is only about 30 seconds.

So what I'm looking for is a video editor that can open the MKV do the edits I mentioned above and output to the same container/codecs as source file without re-encoding anything OR one that will re-encode ONLY the edited parts (to match the source file) and not the whole video. I tried using AVS video editor, but when I go to output, the only options I get are AVI,MPEG,WMV,QT. So it then has to re-encode the whole movie, which on my computer would take hours.

Not possible. Adding overlays and transitions requires the the frames be decompressed, the effects added, then recompressed.

I'm not aware of any such "smart" editor for MKV files.

Thats too bad. Seems like it would be a very useful thing. Are there any "smart" editors that work with other file types? (in the future they could possibly support MKV). I did find a way around it, but it was some extra work.

I used solveigMM video splitter (because with MKV's its frame accurate) split the vid into parts, and edited what were then 15s clips. After editing I chose .AVI (AVC/MP3) for output. Then I used MKVMerge to mux a new .MKV consisting of the AVC from the .AVI and the AAC from the original. Finally I used SolveigMM Video Splitter's joiner to put the pieces back together again.

  5. VideoRedo has a smart editor for h.264. I'm not sure what containers it supports. Or audio codecs.

I just checked out that VideoRedo, Looks like it's mainly a "smart" cutter/joiner, which I already have 2 of. I don't think it can do any editing other than cut/join, not like transitions from one scene/vid to the next, or video/image overlay.
