    hello!

    I want to convert a dvd to a playable file in a standalone player (like avi, mpg, etc)

    which is the easiest, most quality way?

    Just copy it? DVDfab decrypter for commercial movies or imgburn for home burned dvds.

    Or isn't it a dvd-video ?

    DVD disc -> DVDFab -> ISO discimage file.
    ISO -> Imgburn -> Duplicate DVD disc (plays in standalone players). That's the simplest it gets.

    But if you mean standalone MEDIA PLAYERS (and not DVD/BD players), you should use DVDFab (or ANYDVD + DVDShrink,etc) -> VIDEO_TS folder with VOB+IFO+Bup files

    VOB files -> VOB2MPG -> MPG2 files. (usually with AC3 audio)
    These are playable in most ALL media players.

    The quickest and easiest way to simply convert your DVD to an MKV file that will retain the highest quality and be able to play in virtually all media players is to use MakeMKV

    It will scan and convert pretty much any DVD/Blu-Ray rip/disc and convert it to an MKV. You can also choose what audio track to use or subtitle track, if it has more than one. Its not free but to me is probably the best an easiest way in one package and its very very fast
