    I have various movie files
    Some from DVD
    Most from Xvid
I want to resize so I can play on my mobile

Handbrake - this does the job great
Except - this take toooooo long

What's the fastest program out there that will create MP4's for me from avi's, mkv's or dvd files?

    Thanks

    Use faster encoder settings.

Try freemake video converter (be sure to unselect all adware crap when you install).

Or else batch convert with vidcoder over night ( handbrake engine).

In vidcoder can you choose the ultrafast x264 preset under the video tab for faster encoding.

If you are using bitrate based encoding you will lose some quality with faster settings. If you are using quality based encoding the resulting file will still be the same quality, but it will be larger.

What handbrake settings are you using anyway? If you're using one pass target bitrate you're using the fastest method already in general. But the quality isn't so great ... which may not bother you on a mobile. As jagabo says quaility based encoding is the best compromise, but then you don't know what the file size will be. Not a deal breaker for most.

Handbrake isn't a slow encoder. There actually isn't that much difference between any of them. The 'fast' ones just use the lowest quality settings.

Unfortunately, the only real to get faster encoding is a faster computer.

  9. But the lower bitrates shouldn't look bad on a 3 inch screen. His mobile.
