Make up your mind. Do you want to keep the DVD quality or do you want probably crap "avi"?

Seems like an odd reply to me. jerrylee didn't mention quality anywhere in his post.

    jerrylee,
If you want to do it without converting, try MakeMKV. It should repackage each DVD to a single MKV file, then you should be able to join the two MKV files using MKVMergeGUI.

Or you could convert each DVD, then join the two output files, whether they be AVI or MP3 or MKV etc. When you convert video, as long as the same encoder settings are used each time and both contain the same type of audio etc, you shouldn't have any problems joining the output files together with the right software. Or you can try VobMerge.

From the O.P.'s description I get the idea the joined DVD's might be too big to fit on one disc. So, why not re-author and make it a dual-layer DVD.

I split a big dvd-video into two parts a long time ago, then later wanted to join them together again. The method I used was to run each half of the movie through Vob2Mpg, which gave me two mpeg files without degrading picture quality. I then joined the mpeg files together with VideoRedo and reauthored. The other ways I tried left a little hitch in the playback.

The OP could use the trial for VideoReDo TV Suite for joining the files and authoring a new dvd-video. It would probably even accept the existing vob files as input and join them together without having to use Vob2Mpg first.
