  1. I've seen a few videos on youtube that have an animated promotional banner in them like in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9UErvTI5L8. It appears at 1min.

Anybody knows how I can do this?

Use Adobe After Effects, Autodesk Combustion, Inferno vs. (Commercial programs) or Blender (Open Source) etc.

If you're talking about the swooping sparkler effect, that usually falls under the tool known somewhat as "particle emitter". You have to tell the tool/plugin what kind of characteristics it should have (which may change over time) and then keyframe the motion path(s), and then "generate" the effect. This could also be tied in to another tool, such as text, so that the effect morphs from or into text (instead of doing a simple dissolve).

The banner itself is made in a graphics editor, and saved as a PNG still sequence.

The flying text is made in a Titler software or plugin in your NLE.

The rotating cube is made in any basic 3D software.

Then they are composited together on your NLE timeline.

Try to think simple, and deconstruct it mentally into easily doable tasks.
