Burn the disc again with another brand of disc. Or at the very least try another disc from the batch you were using.

It could just be a bad disc that your particular dvd player doesn't like.

If that doesn't work go back to the source file and make another dvd from scratch. You should try another program to test. Use something like avstodvd (freeware) to make another dvd. Then burn with imgburn.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

Will the disc (or video_ts folder) play in your computer through software)?

    Did you try another disc?

What do you mean exactly by wouldn't play? Did your player not recognize the disc or did you just get a blank screen?

If it was the latter the avi file may have been produced using weird codec packs. avstodvd was the only program I found that'd deal with those, but the problem with it was it installed weird codecs that I won't use anymore. Nowadays if I were to burn a dvd I'd use avidemux to encode to mpeg and then use dvdstyler to author the dvd structure. Avidemux works with pretty much any file that isn't broken and doesn't need to screw up the registry to do it.

I use only taiyo yuden dvd's from Japan and have never had a bad one. I burned 3, all the same file structure, and yes they play when I go into the disk and select the appropriate file segment. I'm burning this for a friend (I'm diskless) so he can view this via his dvd player. Thats the rub...this thing doesnt autostart and play once inserted. Freemake has always finalized the disk so it was playable in a dvd player no matter what format it was originally in, so this is a little confusing.

Have you ever given your friend discs from your burner before?

He might have one of those extremely picky dvd players. Can he usually play burnt discs or is this the first time he's doing it?

I'm guessing he doesn't have a computer or one strong enough to play the files your giving him if you are "discless". though standard def dvd files should play on even pretty old computers - though maybe not anything older than pentium 3 I'm guessing. So unless its extremely ancient they should work on it.

Does he have more than one dvd player? I'd try it on another first. If not do you have an old dvd player you could loan to make sure it works on that one?

Edit - oh and if its a really picky player have you tried -r vs +r to see if it makes a difference? It shouldn't on any modern dvd player from the last four or five years I'd say. But if its an older one who knows it might still be a factor.

I must be stoned, it works fine in a DVD player. I converted the file and burned the disk and then reinserted it into my PC's optical drive(s) and neither of them would start the disk, so I inserted it into my PS3 and it wouldnt play it. I was just wanting to check the integrity of the disk before I handed it to my friend, so based on it not playing in my PC or my PS3 I thought I had a problem (previous conversions and burns worked just fine in both my PC and PS3) and apparently there is something amiss, but I finally blew the dust off my DVD player and inserted the disk...it played perfectly, started just as it should. So I dont know what to think about playback on my PC and/or PS3 but at this point dont much care. I'm gonna get out of the burning for friends business, this is precisely why I got out of the disk format in the first place. I've gotta Boxee Box that plays everything I throw at it without any conversion or disks.
Sorry to have wasted everybodys time, but thanks for taking the time, I really appreciate the goodwill of others.

    Well at least it works.

Its unusual that the ps3 wouldn't play it. The ps3 is pretty versatile. While many here do rightly point out it is not as versatile as a wdtv media player or a competitor it can do quite a bit.

Could this be a pal disc? But it should play on a pc if it is a pal disc. The ps3 won't play a pal disc however. Your dvd player might be a region free unit that can play pal.

There might still be a hangup if your ps3 can't play it but your dvd player can. I'm not sure what the issue might be however. Just note that there might still be an issue.

But since you won't be burning many discs if it all it seems you can just pass on this issue going forward then.

And the - or + r should not effect the ps3 at all. At least I don't think it should. I haven't paid attention to - or + r in forever so I just pop in whatever I have.
