    Hi,

Have just bought a new AMD 6 core PC with 8gig of 1600 ram
    2 x 1 tb drives @ 7200 Motherboard is Asus M5 A99X
    Win 7 64
    Nvidia Geforce GT 440 card

I cant work out why I am dropping frames every 2 - 3 minutes with my Mini DV capture.

I am merely using the same software that i have been using on other PCs in the past without
    any capture issues whatsoever.

Firstly I just completed 8 x 1 hour HDV tapes captured with Sony HD Movie Studio 11 ( Latest )
All of these went thru perfectly using my Canon XH A1 HDV camera

Then I tried a mini DV Tape.
dropped frames from the same Canon HDV / Mini DV Camera
dropped frames from Sony DVCam / Mini DV pro unit
dropped frames from cheap but reliable Canon Mini DV camera
All of these were using firewire from unit to PC.

Then I tried camera to AVDC100 using rca leads but also dropped too many frames
    ( about 500 frames dropped in 20 minutes. )

Then installed TMPGenc Video works 5 and got same dropped frames issue.

Then installed Vegas 8 and got same dropped frames using Canopus and direct
    to pc with firewire.

I have been using most versions of Vegas for about 8 years now and capture
    video for a living.

Yes I have clicked on update drivers in device manager and Win 7 tells me that I'm up to date.

Have I bought a motherboard or Graphics card with some known audio problems ???

I must admit that i don't know much about building a system, I just know how to sit
in the drivers seat and steer the mouse 10 hours a day.

Can anybody suggest any possible answers to this problem

    Cheers
    Scott

Are you installed all drivers that came on the DVD?

    The
windows 7 installs only the basic drivers with no
    acceleration.

  3. Are you capturing to the drive that doesn't have Windows installed on it? On a new Win7 computer Windows is doing a lot of stuff with the boot drive in the background (indexing, defragmenting, downloading updates, etc.).

Have you tried WinDV for DV capture?

I routinely record DV from my ADVC-100 as a background task with no lost frames (Win7-32/Vista-32/XP-Sp3).

There might be a 64bit issue. That is why I stick with 32bit.

    Avoid capture to OS drive.

    Thanks to everyone

Am not capturing to OS Drive.

Am not running any obvious background programs

Have tried 3 capture programs ( all are owned and not cracked and have worked
    previously in my other PCs.

Have also tried 2 mini DV tapes that i know are clean and pristine in quality

It's after midnight here in Australia. Will wake up in the morning and reinstall audio
    card drivers.

    cheers

    Have just downloaded Win DV

    2 questions please

Which AVI type is best 1 or 2

I am capturing Mini DV, Hi 8s and VHS etc. Will create MPG2 files later for DVDs.

Also noticed about 30 AVI files captured during the first 5 mins.

What is a good setting on the option page to have it capture 1 long AVI file
( assuming that this is possible )

    thanks

It depends on the software you will be using later. Some programs require type 1, some type 2, some can accept either.

  8. In WinDV config set AVI frame size to 25550000 or as many zeros as will fit in the box, I don't know why the author did that. Also disable your AV software while capturing, too many programs running in the background can slow your PC down.

Type 2 is normal for typical editors (Premiere/Vegas/etc) but they can also accept type 1.

Type 2 DV adds a second audio stream copy. In the early days this saved CPU cycles required to separate AVI files into video and audio. As CPUs gained power this was no longer an issue but Type 2 remained the default.

    WinDV tutorial
    http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/PapaJohn/61/WinDV.aspx

Discontinuity Threshold = 0 gets one large file.

    1min = 25 fps x 60sec = 1500 frames.
