I bought Ulead SE 11 with capture card from amazon as i wanted to tirn my home movies into dvd's. I installed that capture card and bought all the correct audio leads i would require. I capture using the composite slot as it is an old camcorder that doesnt have S-video.
The video and sound captured fine the first time when i tested it, and then the next day when i went to start doing it all properly, the sound wasn't there.
I replaced the leads, re installed the capture card, re instaleld the drivers and software that came with it and still nothing. I downloaded Videothang to see if the audio had captured or if i just couldnt hear it, and the audio has defintely not captured. I don't know what has happened.
The capture settings are as follows:
Uvs110416-001mpg. ------ Video Mate TV Capture
720x576 DVD Variable ------ Mpeg Audio Layer 2.4800...
Composite
I have windows Vista too.
Anyone got any suggestions?
many thanks , this has been doing my nut for a month

Check that the audio device under 'Video and Audio Capture Settings' is reporting the correct source. That will depend on where your audio in leads from your playback device are going. If they go in to your sound card then that is the device that should be reported.
-
Capture Tab > Options (wheel) > Video and Audio Capture Settings (menu)

The 'SE' ie Special Edition may hold the clue in that.
Where do the audio leads go to ? Do you actually hear sound from Ulead when you play a tape ? Check what your sound device is reporting as the record source ie Line or something else -
The Yellow lead from the camcorder goes into the yellow comp in slot. There is another cable that goes into the audio in slot that is connected to the red lead of the camcorder. and then the audio out lead goes into the sound card slot. These are correct as It worked when i first tried it and i never swapped them about.
I cant see any other options of checking anything else, its fairly cack
my sound device says Ulead, and all those bits are fine too -
OK. The cabling appears fine. But do you actually hear sound ?
The sound device would not actually say Ulead as it only sees a dumb cable.
Now check the sound card to see what it reports it is recording from. You may have a mixer program for the sound card or a recording tab under audio properties (standard windows setup) -
I have just seen your picture. Do you see any options when you click 'Capture Video'. The layout may be slightly different as I use V10 not V11

Sorry. Did not see that. So back to the sound card settings. The mixer will show the current recording source.

Cough. Recording is usually only done from one source. I am also a tiny bit worried about that highlight on microphone.
-
-
What was highlighted before ? What is set as 'default'. Like I said, it is usual for one one source to record from at any one time.
-

Well, in my book, 'Line' means line out or playback whereas 'Line-In' means what it says.
But what is this USB thingy ? Could that have changed the sound record setting or is even cutting out the line setting. -
I doubt it as my usb sound device has always been on the pc, and it worked before. And then if i do unplug it then i wont hear any sound because that is linked to my speakers.
Its an M-Audio Podcast Factory, recording interface. -
I do agree with you about the line thing though. But i have line in the playback and recording tab
-
Ok. Let me throw something at you. I will ignore that the sound worked first time. Now I did assume that you plugged the audio cable from the video device in to your sound card - the one that in built in to your PC ? Now do I have that wrong ?
One other question. This USB thingy is connected to your speakers. Is there also a cable from your PC sound card so that you hear all PC sounds from it or is this USB thingy in fact your sound card and you do not use the one in your PC. -
Yes the audio cable goes from the audio out slot in the Capture Card to the blue audio slot in my sound card.
The USB is all I use for my sounds, it acts as my main sound card, however I do still use the PC sound card ,as the audio cable goes into the monitor when I occasionally use my linux OS that doesnt support my usb thingy. so I know that my pc sound card still works and isnt being controlled by the USB thingy -
You use Vista so I do not know quite how this works. I can only describe it with XP.
If you have two sound devices, Windows must know which one to use. I do not think it can use both at the same time. But before you try what I am about to suggest, does the USB thingy have a free 'Line-in' /Blue or even Pink socket that you can plug the audio cable from the video device. Maybe you could just switch cables on that device as you need them.
Now to the suggestion. These are the XP steps. Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > Sound Recording Default Device. Now that could be set for the USB thingy as you already record with that. You must now change that to the PC sound device and then run the mixer program for the PC sound card to reflect recording from 'Line In'. That really should fix the problem. Of course it is a PIA as you will have to change it back when you do other recording but if there is not an available socket on the USB thingy then I see no other way. -
If you look at my last picture that shows all the devices under recording , and i have tried them all as default with no luck. The problem is, the sound should still come out even if im not capturing the video. When i first did it, and went to the capture tab, i forgot to press capture, and yet the audio and sound came out fine, and when i realised i hadnt captured it, i pressed capture and it stil worked fine.
its bizarre. Thanks for all your efforts though, i appreciate your time. I have been trying to find free capturing software to try it on but as of yet not found any -
I saw the picture but I suggest to you that you are seeing the mixer for your USB sound device and not the Windows one but as I do not know how Vista reports then I could be wrong.
Even so, I still say that Windows can only record from one device at any one time. You appear to have two. I have seen similar setups and you must switch the active device according to the circumstances.
I doubt if it is the capture program even tho it is the SE version. Can you try my suggestion however weird it may sound (no pun intended) to you ?
