  1. I've been using AVS Video Converter 8.0 to convert all video to MPEG-4 (DivX / Xvid - 768 kbps; Audio MP3, 96 kbps) for a long time, for playing on a older DVD drive. Recently I've begun dealing with video that is 720p HDTV and this converter is only able to convert the audio successfully, not the video. I've downloaded a few programs recently hoping one would do the job and also be alot faster then AVS Video Converter 8.0, I've been unable to find one. I'm prefer a freeware/opensource alternative but I will buy commercial if necessary, any alternatives I can switch to ?

Maybe xmedia recode or winff. Use the avi xvid hardware profiles.

And I still like the old handbrake 0.9.3 for video to avi conversions.

Divx/DVD players won't play HD videos. You'll need a new player too. A standalone media player like the Western Digital WDTV or some Blu-ray players.

  4. Those software options, are not the best, they don't work as well as I expected.

That's fine, but there are plenty of free programs, some of which are listed here, that are more than up to the job. You'd be better off in my opinion in spending some money on more modern hardware. I second the suggestion that you buy a WD media box which can be had many times for $60. Physical media has it's uses but it's completely unnecessary these days for playing a video on your TV.
