Why does a 2-3gb video file take up so much space?
I thought Blu-Ray= bigger disk=More space to put stuff on = more files per disk....seems I'm barely able to get a little more on a 25gb Blu-Ray diskk than a standard DVD9 disk.

What am I doing wrong? I think 25gb of disk should hold more video than a 9gb disk.

What dumb newb mistakes am I making.

What is your video source? If you have a hd mp4, avi, mkv, etc then use avchdcoder or multiavchd instead. They will try avoid reconverting and not make the file bigger.

To get smaller output file size in other video converters adjust the video and audio bitrate to get smaller size.

IOW, what jagabo is saying is that if in your old scenario, you took 5 1hour-long files and were just barely able to fit them onto a DVD-9, that must have meant that you were encoding them at ~3.6Mbps.

If you take those same 5 shows and can NOW barely fit them onto a BD-25, that's because you must now be encoding them at ~10.6Mbps.

Those "2-3GB" video files are probably only 2-3GB BEFORE re-encoding.
