I own a DVD player not able to play X(S)VCD films, it is a Samsung 611. In fact, I have tested MPeg1 CBR different from 1150 and Mpeg1 VBR in a VCD with no luck; I have not tryed XSVCD, but here it is said it will not work...
But here comes the new SVCD1!!!!![]()
Just make any Mpeg1 film, CBR or VBR, and record it using Nero in SVCD format. Of course, it will complain about it, but record it anyway... It works. In fact, THE SAME FILES recorded in a VCD that look jerky, looks very good in SVCD. (SVCD is for "SVCD" and 1 for "Mpeg1" video)
I use 352x288, CBR or VBR (file size about 810.000 kbytes), sound at 128 kb/sec (I use a video calculator to get correct rate). As sound is recorded at 128, you get more room for videorate.
Most of my films are converted from DivX to Mpeg with TMpegENC
Oh, I have just put upto 120 mins with good quality in a 80 min CD. Anything above 120 is better to record in 2 CDs.
PS: Remember, any Mpeg video film look worst in computer screens. Look them in your DVD player :P

I am not sure I understand the advantage to this. I have found that the only way I can get good quality is to record mpeg1 at 2048kbit/sec. I make the audio 224 but I hear a popping sound which is not good. I up the audio rate to get rid of most of it. Are you saying that you can reduce the mpeg1 bitrate and get a better picture just because you burned as svcd? Please explain. I am not sure 128 audio will cut it. I am using the Xtasy 5564 everything card. I use nero to burn. I wonder if nero is the reason the sound is crappy.

Quality is a personal thing. Maybe my quality is enough for me but not for you.
I mean I can put upto 2 hours with decent quality in a 80 mins CD. This is at 900 kb/s and sound 128. I hear very well the sound, but I must said that most of my VCDs/SVCD1s are from DivX, but I didnt hear any pop sound.
The SVCD1 is not made for better quality, you get same quality as VCD (same resolution), but maybe a bit less, as I used VBR. The SVCD1 format is intend to be used in DVD players able to play standar SVCDs but unables to play X(S)VCD, as mine (a Samsung 611).
Note this: a MPeg1 VBR video recorded as VCD will not play in my DVD, but THE SAME FILE! recorded in a SVCD "format" CD will play. I thing Samsung as in rom 2 players: one for VCDs and other for SVCDs. VCD players seems to be more strict. -
It looks to me you are in fact making a SVCD! Normally SVCD-resolution (PAL) is 480 x 576 but I believe 352 x 288 in MPEG2 is in fact a valid SVCD resolution. If you feed a MPEG1 file to NERO it re-encodes it to MPEG2 (if you have the plugin installed). But anyway.... good for you to find something that works for you... I know i've searched a long time for a format that works for me.....

No, no, no.
It is a Mpeg1 352x288. Of course, when sent to Nero, it turn on all alarms: no Mpeg2, not resolution... but I said him to switch off SVCD compliant and record it anyway. -
That is indeed evil!, but hey if it works! I will give it a try om my philips dvd710
