  1. My parent's venerable dvp642 has finally died. What's the latest and greatest to replace it? I'd be happy as long as it plays divx/xvid. Component would be a big plus too but not a deal breaker. I'd like to keep it cheap. The dvp has lasted years.

I replaced mine with the Philips DVP3560. Plays everything & upscales to HiDef through HDMI output & payed less then $40. I still have the 642 & use it as a CD player. Yes, the 3560 plays CD's, but this way the 642 is plugged into the CD input & that way I don't need the TV on to play my CD's.

  3. The Philips players are pretty good for Divx playback. The more recent players are far superior to the DVP 642. I have a DVP 5990. But it's hard to find any Philips players these days. The brand was bought by a Chinese company about a year ago and production seems to have ceased. Or at least been highly curtailed.

I've given up on DVD players, because everything new is a cheap Chinese turd.
    The good players are gone.

I got one of these instead: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004N85YB0/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thdifa-20&link...SIN=B004N85YB0
    A Samsung Blu-ray player.

Then the WDTV is always nice. Have one of those too.

Both cost just over $100 each.
